The expanded power plant will be hydrogen-ready, and form part of a trial due to start in late 2024 to blend hydrogen into the gas, ramping up from a three per cent blend to 20 per cent, with a long term vision to move towards 100 per cent hydrogen and to deploy similar technology across all peaking plants.

Work at Brigg is expected to last around nine months and the plant will be fully operational in early 2025.

Ireland could do the same.

Dublin City University research says there are "a few monumental challenges that have been identified; the main one being ports".

It says while everyone agrees ports are necessary to build infrastructure at sea, "knowing how ports operate matters".

"Sailing long distances, between ports or from other countries to the installation site, is an expensive and poor use of resources that will escalate the implementation costs and ultimately increase the cost of energy to the customer"

The research says at least two ports are needed to deliver Ireland's 2030 targets (under the assumption that building begins by 2026.)

Follow German approach

The German Cabinet today (May 29) passed a new law to ease planning approvals for clean hydrogen projects to the accelerate expansion of the energy carrier.

Berlin has said the Hydrogen Acceleration Act creates the legal framework for the “rapid development and expansion of the infrastructure for the production, storage and import of hydrogen.”

Hoped to simplify and digitise planning, approval and procurement procedures, the act is intended to reduce regulatory requires and amends various existing laws.

Once law, it will give hydrogen infrastructure “overriding public interest” status, allowing authorities to prioritise approval.
