As the Foreign Secretary said last week, this is a world more dangerous, more volatile, more confrontational, than most of us have ever known. We need to face up to that fact and act accordingly. Not in a year or two. Not in a few months. But now.

What is going to be vital is that the new integrated procurement model which we have set out, must turn government’s relationship with industry into a true strategic partnership – the 2.5% commitment will allow long term planning on shipbuilding, for instance, which will be vital to our ability to get the next generation of ships and submarines into service as quickly as possible. Those platforms will carry the innovative inventions which give us that critical military advantage. So we must now make industry the sixth domain of our defences.

We must do all we can to stack the odds in our favour. The future is not guaranteed. So it is up to all of us to write the next chapter together. Governments can and must provide the money and the leadership, but only industry can give us the tools to enable our brave military personnel to deliver that credible deterrence, denial capability or front-line defence should it be necessary. That safe and secure, peaceful and prosperous world we wish for our children doesn’t come free.

Fleet Solid Support Recommendations

Recommendations:

Accelerate the Fleet Solid Support Programme, to avoid any further delays.

Assess options for short-term solid-store replenishment capability to cover the gap. Such options could include buying or leasing a commercial vessel, buying or leasing a similar vessel from another nation, or refitting a Tide class ship to increase its solid store replenishment capability.

Amplify the RFA’s overall replenishment capabilities over the medium term by procuring more fleet solid support ships beyond the three currently planned, and either building more Tide class ships or by accelerating the design of the new class of oiler.

Shapps to hail new 'golden age for British shipbuilding'

Grant Shapps will hail a "golden age for British shipbuilding" in a speech at the Sea Power Conference in central London today as the Conservatives continue their push to talk about defence.

The defence secretary will announce that "up to" six new warships to support the Royal Marines will be commissioned.

This will mean that "up to" 28 warships and submarines are in the pipeline for the UK's armed forces.

Mr Shapps will say this is possible due to the government's commitment to raise defence spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2030.

He will no doubt hit out at Labour for not matching that commitment as dividing lines are set out ahead of the general election, expected later this year.

Grant Shapps has announced that development has begun on the new Multi Role Support Ships (MRSS), which will be specialist warships designed to rapidly transport the Royal Marines Commando Force from sea to shore around the world.

In an interview with The Telegraph, the Defence Secretary said he was investing money into the support ships because Britain will need to fight and win future battles with China at sea.

“We’re making these critical investments in shipbuilding to build the future Royal Navy needed to deter our adversaries, and then win if they are not deterred,” Mr Shapps said.

“As nations like China and Russia invest heavily in their militaries we must make sure the UK leads our allies so that the West is not left behind.”
