What ceasefire? Russia bombed a power substation in Slovyansk, Donetsk. This was one of several attacks that took place barely an hour after the ceasefire. Such a 'deal,' is barely worth using as toilet paper. Delusion, ignorance and avarice from the usual posters.

I have explicitly stated several times now that Zelensky would lose an election. He has already offered to step down anyway. An election would bring Zaluzhnyi to power, and he would be even more hawkish on Russia than Zelensky.

I do agree UK government should be investing more in infrastructure, transport and energy. Country has been a scruffy mess for years now.

The Italian army is increasing its numbers by 40,000 according to General Luciano Portolano. These will be reserves on top of its existing 160,000 in the Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as 100,000 in its Carabinieri.

Poland is also going to increase the size of its army from 200,000 to 500,000 soldiers, according to PM Donald Tusk.

Lithuania just withdraw from the Oslo Convention banning cluster munitions. Lithuania, under invitation, also drafts some 4000 citizens annually for military service.

Latvia reintroduced conscription in 2024, having abolished it in 2007.

Finland and Estonia have mandatory military service in place. Sweden and Norway also have some form of military service for its citizens to partake in.

Rheinmetall is repurposing Volkswagen plants as factories for defence.

BAE Systems is currently building a new artillery factory in Sheffield.

Green Party in Germany are going to have to evolve or die.

We need to start investing more in North Sea oil to wean ourselves off Russia. I worry that many legitimate concerns of working people in the UK will be ignored even more than usual, now the establishment has a very convenient excuse for extortionate energy prices.

As I have mentioned before, if there is an election for some reason or another, and Zaluzhnyi wins, Ukraine is going to be even more hawkish on Russian than ever.

@popopop8, why would EU support collapse? This is a huge opportunity for ailing nations like Germany and the UK to reindustrialise and boost their economies, as well as their recent declining influence in the world. Any money “given” to Ukraine is really invested in themselves – spent on arms companies like BAE Systems, Rheinmetall, Thales etc.

Also, Turkey does not want Ukraine to lose any territory. Don’t know how sincere or not, Erdogan is, but nonetheless, he believes taking the side of Ukraine will get him brownie points with the EU (he wants Turkey to be part of the EU, although personally I do not think it should be allowed to be in the EU for a ton of reasons).

@johnsilk, a lot of it is going to be paid for from frozen Russian assets. This was explained at the recent security and defence conference at Chatham House. Don’t read too much into Blackrock, their presence is almost meaningless – they are invested in everything and everywhere.

No deal is going to happen.

Russia has to be given a bloody nose if the West wants to maintain, let alone improve its standing and influence in the world.

@alex1978uk, yes, just watch and see. It’s actually painful how predictable Russia are. They will not honour anything. Just watch Trump blame Zelensky for the inevitable breakdown in talks and the creeping escalation in hostilities. Most people are in denial on this board, not just because the ensuing conflict is essentially WW3, but because they are too blinded by greed and avarice to care about anything other than money.

While I hope any potential conflict is not as global and destructive as possible, a bigger, nastier, longer war will make potential nationalisation, court cases and mineral deals seem totally and utterly irrelevant. One could enter into a position in FXPO then? Who knows how low it could go? Will it be even worth it? You could be waiting years for the stock to come good. The trolls on this board are going to have to find a new hobby. The vultures will starve. There will also be negatives. Next year or two will show us.

@Geldautomat, EU are already getting involved. I agree the SP is likely going to sink, however, Trump won’t succeed convincing Putin to make concessions even if he tries. Putin and Lavrov said yesterday that they are not going to make ANY CONCESSIONS. And why would they? Trump has given them everything they want anyway! He wants to restore Russian diplomatic missions, lift the sanctions and embargoes on Russian companies and VIP individuals, no longer isolate Russia.

What does Ukraine get?

No NATO membership, no security guaranties, removal of intel and aid.

And, anyway, the leaders of the 2 largest opposition parties in the Ukrainian parliament, former President Petro Poroshenko and former PM Yulia Tymoshenko, are both AGAINST war-time elections.

The popular frontrunner, former general Valerii Zaluzhnyi, supports Zelensky. Zaluzhnyi said today: “It is not just the axis of evil trying to revise the world order. The US is destroying the world order.”

If Zaluzhnyi is the replacement, he will never accept a deal. He is a big war-hawk.

Zelensky was confirmed to have an offshore account, an incredibly common practice among the rich and powerful in the former Soviet Union. Nothing wrong about that. The banks in these states are not trusted at all. Much safer to store your wealth abroad.

Zelensky does not have ‘billions.’ Whatever money he does have is from his TV production company.

European reliance on Russian gas was one of the most stupid things ever (blame Merkel for that). In the UK, we have absolutely gutted our armed forces – an incredible act of national self-harm we are only realizing now. Trump has been correct criticising this. But he actually seems upset now we are doing something!

None of this had to happen int the first place if we provided enough of a deterrent to Russia.

Macron made it clear in his speech earlier he won’t accept a dictated peace on Ukraine. Nor will he standby.

This comes after the US suspended weapon supplies and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. The US is also reportedly planning to remove the sanctions placed on Russia at the beginning of the war. Incredible betrayal. I’m confident, unfortunately, that no ceasefire will succeed (if it happens in the first place). Putin can rest easy, comfortable in the knowledge that Trump will blame Zelensky and Ukraine for the failure of any negotiations. Russia will ignore any ceasefire, simply because it can.

More detailed and concrete decisions will probably be made next week at a gathering of Chief of Staffs of various European nations.

Fair enough. I will go long again only when British and French forces are deployed. The consequent drop in the SP should mitigate the risks of any investment. I am waiting for sub 40p again.
