The organisation overseeing the world’s richest economies hiked its forecasts for the UK economy this year and next year, propelling Britain to the top of the G7 rankings for growth.

The UK economy will expand 6.9 per cent this year, 0.2 percentage points higher than previously expected, according to the Organisation for Economic Development’s (OECD) latest forecasts for the global economy.

In its previous projections, the UK economy was still ahead of its G7 rivals, but the fresh report cements Britain’s position as one of the world’s leading economic growth engines.

The UK will retain its crown as the fastest growing economy out of the world’s economic powerhouses, expanding 4.7 per cent in 2022, the OECD said.

The high growth print, however, has been partly driven by Britain suffering one of the worst hits from the Covid-19 crisis, with its economy sinking 9.7 per cent last year.

There has been some good news for the UK economy with the OECD predicting Britain is headed for the fastest growth in the Group of Seven major economies this year and next.

The bad news is that the OECD reckons the economy will suffer a setback if supply shortages are allowed to worsen.

More British manufacturers than at any point in the last 30 years reported rising costs last month, according to a survey on Wednesday that underlined pressure on the Bank of England to raise interest rates.

The IHS Markit CIPS UK Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) rose in November to 58.1 from 57.8 in October.

The growth of British house prices accelerated last month and the market was holding up despite the end of pandemic emergency support measures for housing and the broader economy, mortgage lender Nationwide said on Wednesday.

House prices rose by 0.9% in November compared with October when they rose by 0.7%, Nationwide said. A Reuters poll of economists had pointed to a monthly 0.5% increase.
The increase left house prices 10% higher than in November 2020, above a median forecast of 9.3% in the Reuters poll.

London gets its second new clearing bank in 250 years today, as The Bank of London launches in the city to approve and process cross-border payments.

Founded by Anthony Watson, a former chief information officer at both Nike and Barclays, The Bank of London is taking on the four banking giants HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, NatWest and Barclays, which have dominated the market since the 1960s.

Hann-Ju Ho, Senior Economist Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said: “Business confidence remains robust above the long-term average, but it dipped this month as economic optimism and trading prospects were affected by the persistence of rising costs and supply chain issues.

“Pay expectations remain elevated with a quarter of businesses anticipating rises of 3% or more in the next 12 months which will add to business costs, but it bodes well for staff facing into economic challenges.”

Traders and analysts had been confident of a 15 basis point rate hike to 0.25 per cent with pressure on the bank to get a grip on soaring inflation, which hit a decade high in October.

But the Bank of England may now hold off until next year to increase interest rates amid an as-yet unknown economic impact of the Omicron variant.
