BHP, the world’s biggest miner, has warned of a difficult outlook for its flagship iron ore business because of the proposed easing of border restrictions in Western Australia.

The cautionary notice came in a quarterly production report in which the company cut guidance for its coking coal division, which is based on the other side of the country, due to worker absenteeism caused by the Omicron coronavirus variant.

“The proposed easing of Western Australia’s border restrictions on February 5 2022 may introduce some short-term disruption to the operating environment as the Covid-19 pandemic evolves in the state,” BHP said in the report.

US President Joe Biden is reportedly in talks with aviation and industry stakeholders over 5G issues, after US airlines warned the roll out could have “a devastating impact” on the sector, Reuters reported.

In a letter sent yesterday to US transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, the chief executives of several airlines – including United, Delta and American Airlines – have warned that tomorrow’s roll-out of the 5G service “could potentially strand tens of thousands of Americans overseas,” causing “chaos” for planes.

“Unless our major hubs are cleared to fly, the vast majority of the traveling and shipping public will essentially be grounded,” they added, asking the Biden administration to implement 5G within two miles of airport runways.

LONDON, Jan 18 (Reuters) - British employers added 184,000 staff to their payrolls in December, monthly tax data showed on Tuesday, taking total staff numbers to 1.4% above their level in February 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The broader unemployment rate for the three months to the end of November fell to 4.1%, the Office for National Statistics said, below economists' forecasts in a Reuters poll for it to hold at 4.2%.
