Vanadium Demand22 Jul 2020 23:08
I've been pondering why there is a territorial difference between China (where vanadium is selling about 30% higher (hence why Bushveld have more than tripled sales to China) vs elsewhere; especially the China vs US difference; and I believe one of the factors is Republicans have been in control these past few years, and they're absurdly resistant to investing in renewable energy.
The good news is that, the new stimulus funding that has been announced, includes LOADS of money being chaneled into renewable energy generation, with US$35,000,000 committed to offshore wind farms in the first half of 2020 alone — that’s up 320% year-on-year.
The additional bit of good news of course is that the US Elections are less than 4 months away and the Republicans look on course to lose the Oval Office, the Senate, and the House of Congress to the Democrats, who are know climate change is a huge issue, and they will do loads to invest in green energy. All of which will increase vanadium demand.
Biden isn't one of the "Green New Deal" sorta Democrats demanding 100% green energy and 0% from fossil fuels but it's uncountable that US demand would multiple.
We're also seeing Australia make huge efforts to switch over to green energy sources (especially solar farms) which will also increase vanadium demand.
The UK appears to be increasing demand too (look at the massive Cleve Hill Solar Project in Kent that has been approved by Boris's Govt).
If Europe could also follow suit that would be remarkable.
In addition to all of that we're seeing more companies starting to invest in vanadium. Colruyt Group has announced they are already. And, as I mentioned, I know of UK multi-billion pound company wanting to invest in energy storage batteries (hopefully vanadium). And there'll be countless others I'm sure.
At the same time we're seeing more and more stories about the fire hazard of lithium batteries. I mentioned the ones used in e-scooters earlier but there's loads of stories out there. These stories will force there to be a switch. If vanadium could capture the Electric Vehicle market that would be hugely exciting (exactly what Colruyt Group are going to be doing!)
Naturally all this will increase the demand for vanadium.
That vanadium has to come from somewhere. Bushveld currently supply 3-4% of the world's vanadium. With Vanchem as well as Vametco, they plan to be able to increase this at least 3 times over in the next few years.
When you think of the bigger picture, everything is going in the right direction already. And if Trump loses in November that'll accelerate at an even faster pace.
