Please remember that the MMs' official job is to create (and maintain) an orderly market. So they have to prevent crazy hikes / drops if they can, and conversely they do not want let the SP be too stagnant for too long either or there will be even less interest.
Hence the SP's reactions depending on the volume.
Additionally, please remember that MMs are not investors, they make money based on the spread between buys and sells. With high volume, no need for a big spread to make money. With low volume, they need larger spreads.

This whole "MMs are accumulating shares, hence not letting the SP go up" is unlikely (although I cannot verify for sure, I'm not an MM and they are pretty secretive).
