George yes precedent is an issue, however at the same time they are rehousing a whole community affected by their mining in another country, this is sensitive by nature anyhow, I would not like bad press in a different country at that moment in time either.

I think Barrick will be the loser here unless they about turn sharpish.

When we were going onto the 2019 mining code years ago, I read quite a lot from the consultancy companies who were analysing that code before it came into force, between release and decree.

I would not be sticking my neck out.

If these consultancy companies were correct there were numerous parts which were applied retrospectively in the 2019 code, covering a few areas of existing mining.

It was a very complicated code, even recategorising many mined materials.

Furthermore they were quite clear what the aim of the code was to do and the wider ECOWAS and other African countries were moving the same way.

Like some said, big gonads or stupid not sure which. Taking the move in wider Africa and ECOWAS (which they are no longer part of I believe, but were in 2019), I would have rolled over on this one.

Chaffy I don't think it will affect us. Just annoying. I hope it doesn't end up France exerting pressure through French/Canadian companies in Mali.

Except in the way they release information I think any success release will be controlled and even more conservative.

Acores, yes that is my view on Barrick, they have had it good for ages, made plenty for their shareholders from the mine, looking at the rest of the World Mali's code, for the second largest gold producer in the World are reasonable.

It is not as difficult to mine there as many other African countries where they don't have the skill set, machinery etc.

None of the other companies that I am aware of have taken this decision and this is a massive gold mine.

Chaffy not sure depends how they want to play it, with no floor price agreement the government has no offtake either and no minimum profit to calculate.

I think all the companies are just trying to take attention away from Lithium.

The way they load the crushers was a massive project in itself two land levels with a massive hopper set in a similar structure as a dam on the lower level around the bottom of the hopper.

It wants to be back in top spot.

For that it needs the West otherwise it gets on the slippery slope again.

The other problem with these articles is they never compare them to the western world.

We realise that increased risk brings greater potential reward, but as you say the ultimate aim is for a peaceful country at which point the risk reduces as does potential reward and the country receives a larger share again.

Mali apparently is back up the table after Covid and is the second biggest gold producer. It is well established unlike many other African countries.
