The FDA’s New Alternative Methods Program is taking important steps towards replacing, reducing, and refining animal testing – with a focus on improving predictivity of nonclinical testing and streamlining development.

From microphysiological systems (MPS) to computational modelling & simulation, the initiative is creating an environment to reevaluate and assess safety, efficacy, and toxicology in new ways.

For drug developers, this could mean:

👉 Better insight into disease processes earlier in R&D

👉 More efficient, targeted nonclinical testing strategies

👉 Greater regulatory flexibility on model qualification and context of use

This direction from the FDA reflects the way we already support drug developers – using Model-Informed Drug Development (MIDD) approaches like QSP, PK/PD, and PopPK to complement or even replace traditional studies – reducing risk, saving time, and supporting robust regulatory submissions.
