Romanian daughter of Austrian OMV will search for deposits on the shelf of Georgia
Romanian OMV Petrom, daughter of Austrian OMV, won the tender for the II license block on the shelf of Georgia
Tbilisi, Jun 25 - IA Neftegaz.RU. The Ministry of Economy of Georgia summed up the results of the tender for the right to conduct geological exploration ( geological exploration ) and hydrocarbon production on the shelf of the Black Sea.
This was announced on June 25, 2020 by the Minister of Economy of Georgia N. Turnava.
An open international tender for the right to conduct geological exploration and oil and gas production at the II and III license blocks of the Black Sea was held by the Oil and Gas Agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia (SAOG) on June 22, 2020.
The Romanian OMV became the winner of the tender for the II license block Petrom, daughter of the Austrian OMV.
According to the Ministry of Economy, offshore drilling will begin after seismic surveys.
Previously plannedthat the Georgian government will announce an auction for the development of oil and gas resources in the Black Sea at the end of 2019.
By this time, the study of the potential of the Georgian sector of the Black Sea, conducted by ExxonMobil, should have been completed.
However, the competition was announced in January 2020.
Georgia is the only country in the Black Sea basin where there is no prospecting and extraction of oil and gas on the shelf.
At the same time, there are promising subsoil deposits for the extraction of hydrocarbons on the shelf of Georgia.
So, in 2000-2009. Anadarko conducted geological exploration in the Georgian sector of the Black Sea and discovered promising oil reserves in 2 subsoil areas in the amount of about 140 million tons.
Georgia is not able to independently develop offshore oil and gas deposits, however, foreign partners are also actively involved in the development of onshore deposits.
One of the main foreign oil and gas companies in Georgia since the 1990s. was an American Frontera Resources.
In 2016, the company announced the discovery of 5.3 trillion cubic meters of gas in eastern Georgia , promising to begin exporting gas to Turkey and Eastern Europe in 2021.
Later, these statements were not confirmed, and in 2020, during lengthy court proceedings, the Georgian authorities terminated the contract with her due to violations of its terms.
Therefore, the Georgian authorities approached the choice of a partner for offshore projects very seriously.
One of the competitive conditions was the availability of at least 5 years of experience in the search for or extraction of oil and gas offshore.
OMV Petrom quite successfully works on the shelf of Romania, even despite a number of problems that arose due to changes in the country's legislation.
