Future- Clue is in the name change29 Sep 2016 12:26
TMZ, will soon (1st Nov) be known as Frontier Smart Technology Group Ltd ( FSTL). Dont forget, Toumaz merged with Frontier SILICON , which designed and sold silicon chips for DAB Radio. It licensced the base technology from Imagination Tech, which also had a consumer hardware divison called Pure, that sold DAB radios, that you see in shops. In return TMZ sold DAB chips to Pure. A rather unusual circular realtionship.
Now, that Imagination has sold Pure divison, its advanced design-knowledge relation on future DAB Radio with Frontier Silicon (Digital Radio divsion of TMZ) disappears. Hence TMZ , will no longer design silicon for DAB or for that matter for Wi-Fi enabled Speakers for GoogleCAST, hence the name Silicon, disappears from Frontier's name?
It will now focus on software only. Its software will be integrated with 3rd party silicon vendors, who will than sell a packaged solution to consumer hardware vendors, like DAB radio , WiFi speakers etc. thus opening up more channels to market. This has several advantages, first being a massive reduction in R & D cost as a pure software development company. Secondly it re-postions itself as software-platform company, which can easily further integrate itself into other bigger muisc streaming platforms. ( Spotify, Apple Google music, etc) and licensce its underlying software solution to 3rd party silicon vendors ( in a similar biz model to what ARM and Imagination do, with much higher valuations) plus the extra revenues for software integartion service.
Having got rid of all the hardware gubbins, it frees , itself to become an easy acquisition target from music - audio platform company or a software IP licensing comapny. The aquiring company also benifit greatly from over £100 million, in tax equity, that can be written off against its profit , that TMZ has build up as retained losses since 2002.
As for future product offering, thay have mentioned voice recogintion( as added service) for controlling WiFi enabled speakers and radios. The future is now, more exciting, than ever, however, wether current managment have the requiste domain skills to execute this possible plan, remains to be seen. They will need to bring in some new blood soon. Maybe , its quicker via a merger with a more aggresive US based company.
