SSE plc, Alkane Energy plc, UK Coal plc, Hargreaves Services plc, Green Park Energy Limited, Tower Colliery and ENER-G are the principal players in the mine gas sector with power generation plants at operating and abandoned coal mines y The current total of mine methane generating capacity in the UK is around 50MW whereas in Germany more than 200MW has been installed since its inclusion in the renewable energy law (EEG) in 2000. Although the DEFRA estimates suggest a total capacity of 115 MW ACMMO believes that at least 150MW could be the final total based on actual projects. The German environment ministry estimates mine methane emissions at around 550,000 tonnes per year, much higher than the DEFRA estimates even though on average UK coals are much gassier and there are more abandoned mines in the UK. If the UK were to follow the example of Germany, and the more recent inclusion of mine methane as recoverable energy in the French renewable energy law, ACMMO estimates that a potential 150MW of mine methane generation could be installed in the UK. ACMMO submits that the only available way to encourage this is to include mine methane in the proposed RO banding structure with established technology for recoverable methane such as landfill and sewage digester gas.

Kellingley, North Yorkshire: Planning application submitted in 2013 others to follow:- now the basic £££s value is about £2 million per MEGGAWATT produced on the Books!!! now multiply by the addition of COAL BED METHANE lets just double it , as COAL BED METHANE is 5 - 10 meggawatts, then add the efficiency of HEAT EXCHANGERS I reckon a minimum of 25 Meggawatts per plant!! so thats £20-30 MILLION per plant. 8 PLANTS AT HARWORTH so lets just add 8x half of £30 Mill ( rest to PEEL) and then take that £120. Mill.... so half that and lets just stick another £60 Million on the BOOKS now just for a laugh!!!

IMO the SYNGAS PLANTS here will quickly take advantage of UNDERGOUND COAL GASIFICATION. this is on test in Warwickshire, and is yet to get public opinion onside. ALKANE already have a coal Mine methane plant here. The current plans target 10mw of generation, thats just from oxidisation of crap from farmers etc. & rubbish. We all know about the Billion Dollar reserves under the West Yorkshire area. and the upcoming opportunities with Shale and many forms of Unconventional Gas and oil exploration, this also encompasses Syngas created from deep Coal seam gasification, Coal Mine methane, Coal bed methane and Shale gas ( the big one). Harworth as we know has mammoth acreage and has a partnership with an operator already a big player in off and on shore Energy generation PEEL ENERGY.... So may be time to take a look at some of those projects to see where value may come in the coming year or 2.
