The Argument: Why People Say It

The premise relies on the fact that stablecoin issuers have quietly become some of the largest structural buyers of US government debt on the planet. Massive Scale: Tether (USDT) alone holds over $117 billion to $122 billion in short-term US Treasury bills to back its circulating supply.

Surpassing Sovereign Nations: Tether currently holds more US debt than major sovereign countries like Germany, Israel, and South Korea. When you combine Tether with Circle (USDC) and others, the total stablecoin market accounts for over $320 billion in Treasury demand.

The "Price-Insensitive" Buyer: Unlike traditional foreign central banks (like China or Japan), which have been actively reducing or capping their US Treasury exposure due to geopolitical tensions, stablecoin issuers must buy Treasuries. By law and by design, to maintain a stable $1.00 peg, they have to park their capital in ultra-liquid, short-term dollar assets. Every time crypto adoption grows, a mandatory buy order is placed for US debt. Politicians in Washington have picked up on this. It creates a synthetic, global demand for the dollar by turning unbanked users in emerging markets into unwitting lenders to the US government.
