Seems the retailers have little problem in acquiring /consolidating in their sectors. Sbry taking Asda off Wal-Mart's hands looks a better deal for dem Yankeeees than the Brits! From little I know Asda targeted the young shopper more interested in price and SBRY the senior shopper at the quality end. Wonder which one will get the chop? Its a mix that might not satisfy anybody. Sbry stock has been a dog for years and invariably topped the list of most shortage shares in London. Never liked food stocks, low margin high vol businesses cratered by the German brigade and now Amazon. A marriage of the afflicted methinks! Doubt there's much upward mileage in the sp given the CMA will be looking into this. We need some action in the O&G sector. With G valued at £600m were still a vulnerable minnow but a highly cash generative one. Cannot be long before a consolidation if not of Kurd o...lies gives G a massive boost upwards. We could be looking at OP of c.$350m this year throwing off c.$175m of fcf or c.50pps cash which values the rest of the business at 165p or peanuts! Morning all.

Pretty much so...however they have to contend with the machines who might control the sp moves (quicker /faster). Not sure how many provide a quote in G but it's probably 5 jobbing firms...whether they can all make money in G I very much doubt. As ever they will adjust their quotes to current vols but it's a risky business for them if there long /short the wrong side. Perhaps others here have a better, more detailed knowledge on jobbers methods. However it aint a license to print money that's for sure. Im sure there are many bargains dealt that dont see the light of day...if u get wot i mean...it's a very liquid mrkt..heh heh...

Hydro...the jobbers can always lay their hands on stock. Plenty of iis will lend - for a price of course and your friendly broker might be doing the same with your shares.

This morning's growth nos were worse than predicted. This will give Carney an excuse to hold off the 0.25% hike in May.

Mixed session here, t350 gained 7 Sage +7 & Mfocus -7. Overnight the tech heavy Nsdq added 115 (+3% ytd). Facebook results boosted the FAANGs so expect a bounce today but not from you know who.

You have obviously been in the game sometime knowing of (T10 and having a broker to talk to), that was essential back in the 70's and perhaps up to the advent of mobs. I occasionally used to vist my broker at the Stock Exchange he took me downstairs where all the brokers had their cubby holes with their quote screens. I'd spend the afternoon there picking up tips! As you'd guess I always bought some stock while I was there. I had a decent holding in a Co called Norbain then 85-95 and he picked me up some at 81 a mates rate deal if ever!....mind you that cost me two massive mixed grills, the only meat not on the plate was pheasant & a couple of Mouton Cadet 'reds' in the downstairs long room across from the exchange. All the business was conducted face to face on the main floor so a lot of arm twisting and 'favours' went on (Norbain 81...I didn't ask). Sadly it's now computer driven and though commission costs are a fraction of those pre big bang we lose out on the best price of that I'm sure and of course it's so impersonal and on the off chance you ever get to speak to anyone they haven't a bloody clue. Case in point when my blood thing delisted I had a series of queries of a technical nature they couldn't answer --- or chose not to, me not having a million bucks invested with them. I dunno maybe it's progress? Anyways always good to have a new face. You have joined the best BB on lse...trust me. H the profit one will have to remain a trade secret...know wot i mean like?...but in the k's%. My bigest single loss was in Aero inventory (a right royal fugazi!) that was nasty! However I suffered a 6fig loss in the '87 crash (trading in the account) when brokers were not answering phones as the London market nose-dived. Remember the hurricane that hit the South East of England on the Sunday night?Phone lines down no trains into London...no mobs in them days!! I was unable to close my positions on the Monday and of course by then it was too late and i was unable to roll over my positions into the next account. Took me forever to recover from that financially (helped by family) and psychologically (nerve was shot). Mind you a decent 5 fig win at Ascot in early '90 more or less squared me away. Currently my blood thing (90% of my assets) would give me serious arse ache if Woodford pulls funding to the Co. In between the usual win some lose some but always at the High risk end of the mrkt....the junk stocks...the waifs and strays the 'story' shares that never quite make it....G for me is a solid 'blue chip.' Which stupidly I sold to put more into the blood thing! My stupidity staggers even me. Of course if it comes right I'll be a millionaire that's wot I tell Rodney.

TUL to shut down its 8 North Sea oil wells by year end. It's 10 wells across eight licenses have added just 2700 boe/d. This marks the end of an 18 year era for TUL which paid £200m to BP in the deal price. Trade body O&G UK estimates that c.200 fields in the UK North Sea will close between 2017 & 2025 at a cost of £17bn.
