London came off from the opening bell dragged down by a stronger pound (1.320) in Far East trading and worries over Brexit votes today. The Irish backstop arrangement is set in stone say Brussels.
The Fed who meet on Wed are likely to leave rates on hold.
Banks and energy led the fallers, BP fell 12 to (495) & RDSB lost 41 to (2227) oil closing in London at
$59.76 (-$1.76).
News that the US rig count had increased and a record 11.4m bpd in Q4 put the skids under WTI & Brent.
Shares in London were mixed, Ocado was a bright spot jumping 20 to (966) on talk of a M&S deal but Tesco off 4 (221) on restructuring (losing in store bakeries, fresh fish & meat counters) that could lead to an overall 9000 job losses. Tesco is the 2nd bigest employer in the UK.
A broad range of retailers have warned the Govt of damage to their businesses which will result in food shortages/supply chain hold up's should we crash out.
Utilitywise sank 71% to
1.61p putting the 'For Sale' sign up after failing to persuade holders to bankroll the Co. Surprisingly only c.10% of the shares in issue (79m) changed hands. Woodford has a small % stake of his income fund in UTW.
A poor start on Wall saw the ftse nailed down (the 5th straight) 62 to (6747) after low of (6734). The 250 fell 109, All off 32
and Aim u/c (912).
Its going to be a very busy wk for investors as 13 of the DJI 30 and 113 of the S&P 500 will report nos this week.
The Dow headed down from the whistle hitting an early low of 24323 (-414) but had clawed back 100 by lunch.
Caterpillar was an early casualty falling c.10% on Q4 nos missing estimates by a wide margin. Consensus for eps were $2.98, actual was $1.78. The c.$13 fall in the sp at lunch took 80 off the DJ.
Others in the red column were Exxon, Chevron, Apple, Msoft & 3M Co.
By 3.00 pm the Dow was 280 down and some bargain hunters helped the Dow to finish 209 down, the 500 off 21 and Nsdq down 79.
In Asia stocks are mixed, TK up 6 after 250 lower with HK (-67)& SH (-3) reacting to charges of fraud, theft and sanction violations against Huawei and top exec Meng Wanzhou who is to face criminal charges.
