BP 4Q nos got London off to a bright start the ftse opening up 42.
BP reported a doubling of profits thanks in part to the purchase of BHP's shale assets, shares rose 20 in early dealings.
However the Co carries a massive £44bn debt, geared at 30% though no-one doubts BP being able to service this through internal means shares closed at near best up 27 to 547.
RDSB followed in sync shares adding 56 to 2487 and other o...lies got a boost, TUL +5 (212) and the 350 O&G put on 275 to 9103 up 8% ytd.
Rises outpaced fallers by 4:1 and at midday the 100 was up 98.
Some poor economic nos we're ignored by the mrkt, the PMI services sector at lowest since 7/2016 for instance pulled sterling down to $1.29.
No doubt about it that confidence is being undermined and the economy is barely growing as Cos cut spending, limit jobs & conserve cash. Brexit wrapped in global uncertainties unfazing the mrkts.
The BOE quarterly report is out on Thursday.
On a brighter note clothing retailers were up for a change, M&S adding 5 to (295), Burberrys up 59 (1867) & Next gaining 58 to (4888).
With Wall opening up 120 the ftse was trading at an intra day high (7155) towards close and the momentum carried across Europe both the DAX & CAC up c.1.5%.
At close the ftse hit a 2 month high up 143 (7177)
All gained 69 (3928) and the 250 added 147 (18996).
US stocks are off early highs (25423) as invstrs close positions awaiting Trumps State of the Union
speech tonight which will be closely watched for any tit bits on trade progress.
Meanwhile Alphabet /GooG fell $8.45 to $1133 as invstrs took exception to a jump in spending although earnings surprised on the upside. Contrast that with Amazon when it 'ups' spending invstrs love the stock.
Walt Disney & Snap Inc report after mrkt closes today. The Dow topped out up 172 (25412), Nsdq +55 and the 500 added 13 (2738).
TK the only mrkt opened is up 47 in very quiet trading.
