Inevitably after a strong run up in stocks in H2 (DJI +1886) investors paused for breath and decided to take some profits despite an abundance of good news, the FDA approved antiviral pill from Pfizer, the passage of the $1tn infrastructure bill and corporate earnings beats, investors have been riding an economic wave of good news. About 89% of the 500 companies have reported Q3 nos and the projected earnings growth rate for the index in aggregate stands at 40%.
Treasuries fell to 1•441% as producers prices rose 0•6% in Oct (yoy 8•6%). Gold firmed to a 2 month high of $1826 and Brent edged up to $84•56 on tight supply and soaring demand from aviation. Analysts are predicting $100 oil as early as Q1(2022). Exxon a one time Dow 30 stock is up 60% this year.
Companies that caught the eye included PayPal who disappointed on their F/Y outlook, stock fell 12% to $204 by close. AMC (Ent) tumbled 12% to $40 despite topping Q3 estimates. The meme stock (an online forum fave) has run up from $2 in Jan, that's a whopping 2526%. The never ending saga of Evergrande drags on with a $148m int payment on an overseas bond due today.
Tesla tumbled $139 to $1024 at close as investors raced to dump stock ahead of any Musk sales. His brother filed to sell 88,500 Tesla worth $109m, added to the stocks woes. Nevertheless the stock is up 45% ytd and just holds on to its $1•1tn mrkt cap. PS. You could have bght Tesla for $4 in mid 2010 that's an annual growth rate of c.66%.
