Alliance between Seeing Machines and the MEDS Clinic for the study of sleep quality in drivers
Clínica MEDS, through its NeuroMEDS Unit and the company SeeingMachines, which has equipment to detect sleep and fatigue in drivers, come together to establish intervention strategies for changes in sleep hygiene, physical activity and healthy eating, which help the health and welfare of these officials and thus avoid traffic accidents.
Through the NeuroMEDS Unit, the quality of drivers' sleep will be evaluated and the necessary intervention strategies will be proposed in changes of sleep hygiene, physical activity and nutrition.
Dr. Marco Tulio Mello (photo below), PhD from the University of Sao Paulo and Professor of Neuroscience, Health and Physical Activity of the Federal University of Minas Gerais -Brazil, who together with Dr. Tania Rodríguez, Head of the Sleep Unit of the MEDS Clinic, Dr. Sandra Mahecha, Director of Promotion of Physical Activity and Seeing Machine professionals, met to visit the MEDS La Dehesa Clinic.
Sleep disorders, which are more than 30, are almost always silent and go unnoticed. Freight carriers and people are usually sedentary and have poor sleep hygiene during shifts. Drowsiness, for example, is an almost cultural feature of Chile, since potentially 70% of the population could at least suffer from insomnia, "says the prominent MEDS professional.
Some statistics specify that 6 times more multiply the option of traffic accident due to drowsiness.
In the opinion of Dr. Marco Tulio, workers and companies should understand that if we do not sleep well, rest is insufficient, the health of the person will be impaired, the immune system will be affected. An official, tired, fatigued will not yield and the company will not work well and will bring risks. Good sleep is synonymous with good health and a good quality of life, "he says.
Seeing Machine, a company of Australian origin, already has in Chile a device that prevents accidents due to lack of sleep. This one takes by name Guardian and is a device that adheres to the windshield, has a sensor and camera that registers in real time the face and the immediate route of the driver. Before any blink, nod or erratic behavior, they immediately alert you with an alarm and vibration in your seat.
We are working with education for our patients and intervening with the MEDS multidisciplinary team in people suffering from sleep disorders. It is the only way to face it. The bad habits of sleep hygiene affect the population in general and transversally, "said Dr. Rodriguez.
