RE: FTSE100 at all tyme high31 Jan 2025 10:36
Vodafone and BT shares have the same challenge - they can re-rate on results day but outside that they tend to drift due to lack of investor interest rather than poor performance.
The market isn't to blame - telecoms invest a decade building the next gen network only to tear down old one and start over. They are classified as utilities, but unlike traditional utilities that rebuild infrastructure once in a century, telecoms do it in a 5-10 year cycle.
The issue seems more like a failure in sales and marketing rather than technology. There is little service differentiation, no meaningful tiering and minimal quality of service differentiation. They spend millions on branding but consumers couldn't care less as its all the same, the only parameter is the price. The upcoming satellite service will be interesting—will they bundle it for free or offer it as a premium add-on? Hopefully, this marks the beginning of stronger product differentiation and new revenue opportunities with premium features.
