" ERBIL — The council of ministers of the federal government of Iraq on Monday approved budget bills for 2023-2025, which is due to be tabled in parliament for a vote in the coming days.
The budget is the largest the country has ever had in the last 20 years, totalling 200 trillion dinars with 25 trillion dinars (12.67 percent of the overall budget) allocated to the Kurdistan Region, according to Iraqi lawmaker Briar Rashid.
The budget had been in the making in the past several months, and is long overdue because of the political impasse that delayed government formation and ongoing negotiations internally and with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) over the specifics of the bill.
Federal budget allocations were one of the sticking points between Erbil and Baghdad. Bilateral agreement on this long-running dispute is expected to pave the way for other issues to be resolved as well, notably a potential hydrocarbons law.
Meanwhile, the federal government of Iraq today deposited 400 billion dinars into the KRG Ministry of Finance's bank account today, which was previously allocated for the months of November and December. The payment was delayed because of a ruling by the Federal Supreme Court arguing that the payment violated previous budget laws. "
