Correct, they don’t have the skill set for large infrastructure projects, it’s as simple as that and the net effect is they just stifle projects that they have no idea of how to implement. You can blame colonialism for some of it, but that is just a ‘go to’ excuse for too many of their ills. Look at Botswana for example, it was a colonial country, just like Tanzania, didn’t get independence till after Tanzania in fact, however, it has followed common sense market reforms and hey presto it has a gdp per capita some 8 times that of the average Tanzanian.

Ain’t great. But as the two articles posted today outline, Tanzania needs power, wants 5,000mw in a very short space of time and can’t possibly afford any of it. Keep the faith. Quality IPP projects will go ahead. JD

Somanga Fungu is a 250Mw Gas to Power Plant (not 3,300Mw as this article says) and if they think they are going to get 2,100Mw at Stiegler’s Gorge on the grid in or around 2020 then they must have been taking Ketamine all weekend!! You do wonder of if they believe this stuff or under punishment of the lash by El Presidente they just keep repeating it?? Btw, most (all) of these plants won’t make 2020 as it is lol.

Suggest you look at the press speculation of 28 June, where an article was posted on here by Yaki suggesting all IPPs (including MCPP) had stalked. The SP tanked 15%. No RNS, the only thing that had changed in sentiment was a posting of an article on a BB, volume was tiny that day too. So it suggests contrary to your post. It also suggest that MMs do in fact read (or their algorithms) read through BBs. JD

The Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is the recent bell-weather for how wrong these African political grand projects can go.

Started in 2011, only 60% complete, multiple design rewrites, proper defects, huge CAPEX overruns and still no one knows when it will complete. Of course, when complete it will take anywhere from 5-15 years to fill the reservoir depending on rainfalls (assuming client change doesn’t destroy the feasibility altogether) and then they have to commission it and get it into operation. So 20-25 years before possible electricity to the grid????

New. But as the below article shows the decision making (whatever that was) follows w rich tradition in Tanzania of making it up as you go along. It appears JPM picked the winner in complete spec without any feedback from his own office / governmental agiences. In fact, no one outside JPM even New it was coming, apparently..... So, we are left with a project, no one knows anything about, with a contractor chosen out of 50 bids, I can’t find a single bit of evidence of any bids having been submitted, no design, no environmental clearance, no actual cost to build it, no plan to clear and prep the site, in itself will take years. In other words, reading between the lines, it’s going nowhere fast. The President is clearly a belligerent clown of the highest order that just makes it up as he goes along. At this point (within reason) I don’t actually mind too much what the SEPCO3 buy in SP is. What I want is them (China Power) in Board and having their full weight of the Chinese State backing MCPP. Once SEPCO3 are on board this will be a much happier place. JD

That is AIM and to be fair we all know what it is when we invested here. Beyond the current SP, SEPCO3 buy in and progression of MCPP to F.C. and all will be forgiven. JD

Nice one Micheal! Power Corporation China (Sinohydro and SEPCO3) won’t hand out free rides as I’ve said before. They’ll have to spend millions on all the required studies and permits and they probably don’t want to do that on spec. Sinohydro is also EDL’s chosen partner on the power side and are further behind than Tancoal was. Looks like the Chinese have chosen their route to power in Tanzania if you ask me IMHO......., JD
