Floor coverings seller United Carpets has had to terminate a number of struggling franchises this year, which is likely to have a detrimental effect on the performance of the group, as it is proving increasingly challenging in the current environment to turn around failing stores.

Hinting at the supply issues Psion has recently experienced as a small player with limited clout, Psion's Chairman, John Hawkins, said the Offer by Motorola Solutions provides Psion shareholders with "certainty in an environment where certainty is in short supply." The shares shot up 27p to 87.5p on the bid.

Motorola Solutions effectively has acceptances in the bag from shareholders representing around 27.0% of the issued share capital of Psion. Motorola Solutions expects to realise cost and revenue synergies resulting in margin expansion opportunities and expects the transaction to be accretive to earnings per share on a non-US GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) basis in the first full year following completion and on a US GAAP basis in the second full year following completion of the takeover. "Psion is a compelling opportunity to strengthen our industry-leading, mobile-computing portfolio with ruggedised hand-held products and vehicle-mount terminals that will deepen our presence in the global markets in which we compete," said Gregory Brown, Chairman and Chief Executive of Motorola Solutions.

Credited by many with creating the whole PDA (personal digital assistant) and smartphone category, Psion's golden years were, unfortunately for the company, in an era when such devices were not so commonplace as they are today. Its EPOC operating system was a forerunner of the Symbian mobile phone operating system, as used by Nokia when the Finnish company was the top mobile phone producer in the world. Psion sold its stake in Symbian to Nokia for £93.5m plus two year's worth of royalty payments (at 84p per Symbian licence sale) back in 2004, and has been concentrating of late on the design of rugged mobile computing devices.

Hand-held computing device pioneer Psion is selling out to US telecoms colossus Motorola Solutions. Motorola Solutions is making an agreed offer of 88p in cash for each Psion share in a deal which values the British mobile computing services company at around £129m. The 88p a share offer compares very favourably with the closing price of 60.5p for Psion on the day before the bid became public but is a far cry from the £18 or so the shares traded at back in 2000.

Its business in Australasia is gathering momentum as evidenced by last July's award, in joint venture with Australian firm CB&I, of a $2.3 billion contract on the Gorgon liquefied natural gas (LNG) project.

A significant sell-off has created a good opportunity to buy shares in Kentz (KENZ). The FTSE 250 firm has significant growth potential, technological expertise and operates in an attractive geographical niche. A 16% share price fall in the last three months leaves the £446 million market cap on an undemanding 10.6 times 2012 consensus forecast earnings per share of 36p, an 11% discount to the sector's average multiple of 11.8 times.

An order book of £49 million provides good visibility on future revenues and a 22% increase in the full-year dividend reflects management's confidence in the outlook. Consensus expects earnings per share (EPS) to increase 14% in 2012 and a rating of 8.6 times 2012 forecast EPS of 8.1p, against a sector average of 11.8, does not adequately reflect these growth prospects.

The £39 million cap's Petro-SIM software is a leading reactor-based modelling system. It both underpins the consulting activities of the group and provides a profitable revenue stream in its own right. Since the announcement of 2011 results in March a major Latin American client has committed to a renewal of its Petro-SIM licences, worth £1.1 million a year to KBC.

A volatile oil price, growing demand for energy in emerging economies and pressure on refining margins in mature markets all support an investment in KBC Advanced Technologies (KBC). These factors are likely to drive demand for the company's two main areas of expertise, consultancy services and software for the energy sector and refining industry. Autumn's interims (11 September) should be strong as a result.
