The chemicals sector was the best performing category on Tuesday afternoon on the back of decent performances by Croda International and Elementis. Croda, the FTSE 100 manufacturer of speciality and oleochemical products, was trading around 2.5% higher after JP Morgan Cazenove upgraded the stock from 'neutral' to 'overweight' this morning. "Croda's notable characteristic through the last downturn was one of resilience, and we see no evidence to suggest that this attraction is likely to wane," said JPMorgan analyst Martin Evans. "The company's targeted 10 per cent growth through the cycle, while participating in high margins, product innovation and growth markets, should reassure investors," he said.

Meanwhile, Magners brewer C&C Group was on the up despite saying that poor weather in the UK and Ireland resulted in weak cider numbers in the first quarter. Nevertheless, Chief Executive Officer Stephen Glancey said that "we are confident that our resilient business model and strong brand market combinations will deliver continued earnings growth for the full year and maintain our business momentum."

SABMiller and C and C were making decent gains on Wednesday, lifting the beverages sector to the top of the pile. SABMiller, the beer giant famous for its Peroni-, Foster- and Miller-branded lagers, was up nearly 3% in afternoon trade after some upbeat comments from Galvan Research. "SABMiller investors clearly have a stake in a group that is steadily evolving into an emerging markets play, despite the recent Foster's Australia acquisition. Even the UK market shows some growth potential with the SAB 'world beer' brands," said head of research Andrew Gibson.

With infrastructure repayments, land receipts and fees over the next six years, based on the current business plan, Quintain anticipates receiving a further potential £80m of cash, which would bring total cash received in the six years to around £150m before development profits (equivalent to around 29p per share), although the actual amount of cash receipts will depend upon market conditions and the pace of development activity.

Knight Dragon will become the senior partner in Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration, taking a 60% stake, with Quintain owning the rest. GPRL has been granted development rights for some 14m square feet of mainly residential mixed-use development land across 150 acres at Greenwich Peninsula. Quintain will receive cash of £78.8m (subject to a post-completion adjustment), of which £28.8m will be paid by Knight Dragon on completion and £50m will be received on deferred terms over a six-year period.

Quintain Estates and Development has published the Class 1 circular for the new joint venture with investment vehicle Knight Dragon relating to Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration. A meeting to approve the transaction will take place on July 23rd, with completion of the transaction expected the following day. In June the firm announced it was hooking up with Knight Dragon, which has agreed to pump money into the development of the Greenwich peninsula in south London. The investment vehicle is controlled by Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun, the Chairman of New World Development, a conglomerate listed in Hong Kong.

Brightside, the specialist insurance broker, has launched car insurance policies for the high street retailer Debenhams. The news played well with investors who pushed the shares up 2.5% in morning trading on Wednesday. Brightside will run the service online and over the telephone through its UK based call centres. Martyn Holman, CEO of Brightside, said: "This partnership between two major players in their relevant industries will benefit both for many years to come."

Cash at the end of the year fell from RM80.5m to RM52.8m.

The ongoing development and marketing activities for Blocks B and C of CX5 are on schedule with full occupancy expected by the end of financial year 2014. The firm is in ongoing discussions to develop a data centre in Singapore, Johor, East Malaysia and China. Dato' Ting Heng Peng, Chairman of CSF Group, said: "Management's core focus over the next two years is to increase the occupancy of Blocks B and C of CX5 while continuing to pursue new development projects to increase the group's data centre capacity in order to grow its recurring revenue streams." Chief Executive Officer Adrian Yong added: "The development of CX5 is gathering pace with successful rental and fit-out of the remaining blocks now our key strategic goal. We have received strong levels of interest across our existing customer base and we firmly believe the facility will be occupied by the end of financial year 2014. Our business continues to be well placed for future growth."

CSF Group, a provider of data centre facilities and services in South East Asia, saw an improvement across all business segments in its full year results, with the jump in rental and maintenance revenue most noticeable. Total group revenue in the year to March 31st rose from RM113.34m to RM207.96m year-on-year, boosting gross profits to RM78.6m (2011: RM39.5m) and profit before tax to RM55.0m (RM49.79m). The gain in revenue was partially offset by a reduction in the gain seen on sale of property, plant and equipment from RM24.56m the previous year to just RM0.068m this time round. Rental and maintenance revenue revenues jumped 25.4% to RM82.4m from RM67.4m the previous year. During the period the company completed of the construction of its CX5 data centre together with the fit-out of critical power infrastructure and associated cooling for Block A, which is currently fully tenanted.

Loudwater Trust, a closed-ended investment company, has sold its stake in AgraQuest for an initial consideration of £27.3m, equivalent to 45.4p per share. Of this amount, around £3.3m will be initially held in escrow against potential indemnification claims. In addition, there is contingent consideration payable should AgraQuest achieve certain performance milestones in future years. The maximum contingent consideration that could be due to Loudwater is £3.5m. The initial proceeds from the disposal will be used to make a further cash return to shareholder

Silverdell, a specialist environmental support services group, has secured two decontamination and dismantling contracts worth a combined total of around £13m. The work is being carried out on sites in Canada for two separate multi-national companies. The first contract, worth around £10.7m, is for the decontamination, demolition and selective dismantling of a plant in Milhaven, Ontario and the second contract, worth around £2.2m, involves the dismantling of a pulp and paper mill plant in Chandler, Quebec, as well as the recovery of pulp and paper mill equipment for reuse in Vietnam. The contracts were secured when the company acquired EDS at the end of May.

Interior Services, an international construction services group, is to chop its dividend in response to tough market conditions. The firm will now pay a final dividend of 4.6p (2011: 10.7p) making a total for the year of 9.0p (2011: 15.1p), marking a reversal of previous policy of increasing the dividend by five per cent each year. The company warned that in the short term it anticipates that trading conditions will continue to be difficult, but was keen to emphasise that outside of the UK it has seen robust pipelines and strong demand for its services. Consequently, the company is continuing to focus on international growth opportunities.

African Minerals also rose 9% after it announced a new Chief Executive. The firm said Keith Calder, a former Rio Tinto executive, would join in August, leaving Executive Chairman, Frank Timis to take a less hands-on role. The company said Calder's experience of large project development at Rio Tinto, coupled with his recent success as Chief Executive of Western Coal, made him the ideal candidate.

International Mining and Infrastructure Corporation rose 9% on Wednesday morning after it said its strategic partner had signed an agreement that will see its iron sold to the Chinese market. The firm's partner, African Iron Ore Group, has signed the deal with China Railway Materials Company, one of the leading Chinese state-owned enterprises. The iron will brought into China for sale to steel mills and other users.

Another business that is clearly betting on a favourable outcome is FALKLAND ISLAND HOLDINGS (FKL). It has raised £8m, most of which will be spent on the Falklands where the company owns a number of sites on the outskirts of Stanley which are suitable for the development of a warehouse park for rental to oilfield services companies. Anticipating an influx of oil men, it is also planning to invest in housing, offices, retail operations and its Land Rover dealership, and it has signed a joint venture with Southampton-based Trant Construction Limited. So despite the sound and fury of the political debate, the oil business of the Falkland Islands is proceeding apace. In the next few weeks it could take a major leap forward. Results from Border & Southern’s Stebbing well and FOGL’s Loligo, along with news of a partner for Rockhopper and the Falklands will be in the news for other reasons that have nothing to do with the anniversary of the war.

The most-used cheque-book in the City got another outing on Tuesday as acquisitive advertising conglomerate WPP strengthened its presence in Brazil. The group has acquired a 70% stake in Foster Informatica, a digital agency based in São Paulo, Brazil. The agency employs 50 people and numbers Monsanto, Bayer, Metro, Danone and Goodyear among its clients. Foster's unaudited revenues for 2011 were R$5.0m, with gross assets at the end of 2011 of R$4.1m. Brazil is WPP's eighth largest market in terms of revenue, and the group is keen to expand its presence in this fast growing market. At the same time it is intent on increasing the proportion of revenue it derives from digital media, so the Foster Informatica acquisition ticks two boxes for the group. WPP's digital revenues currently total around $4.8bn, representing over 30% of the group's total revenue of $16bn, and WPP has set a target of increasing this to 35-40% over the next five years.
