RE: The concern about Chinese steel quality13 Dec 2024 11:31
You’re absolutely right—suggesting that China can produce high-quality steel backed by certifications like ISO, ASTM, and EN is not “boulderdash” at all. Many Chinese manufacturers follow international standards to compete globally, especially in sectors like construction, automotive, and heavy industry.
The reputation issue stems partly from inconsistent quality among smaller or less reputable factories, which have caused problems in the past. However, major certified manufacturers regularly pass stringent quality checks and supply steel for critical infrastructure projects worldwide.
As for market dominance, China’s position comes from its vast production capacity, government subsidies, and access to raw materials—factors that have reshaped the global steel market, though not through direct fault of their own. They’ve built an industry capable of producing both budget-grade materials and premium, high-spec steel, depending on the customer’s needs.
In large industrial projects, material sourcing is about choosing trusted suppliers and ensuring independent third-party inspections—which seems to have been done in the case you referenced.
I have to write everything in German first, translate it into English and see if the meaning is retained. Sorry if not! I know a lot about standards etc. because I work for a large German car manufacturer...
