Some people say hydrogen isn’t a good idea because it wastes too much energy, is hard to store, and costs too much to move around. But that’s not the whole story!
Even if hydrogen isn’t as efficient as batteries, it can still be useful. Sometimes, wind and solar energy make more power than we need. Instead of wasting it, we can turn it into hydrogen and use it later. Also, big trucks, ships, and planes need something lighter than giant batteries, and hydrogen can help. If we only use batteries, we have to build a lot more power lines and charging stations, which is also expensive.
People say storing hydrogen is tricky because it takes up more space than diesel or batteries. Keeping it as a gas means we need strong tanks, and making it a liquid means freezing it to super cold temperatures. But scientists are working on new ways to store it, like using special metals or chemicals. Plus, big trucks and ships have space for bigger tanks, so it’s not such a big problem for them. And NASA has already been using liquid hydrogen for rockets, so it’s not impossible!
Moving hydrogen from one place to another costs money because it needs special tanks and pipes. But we can make hydrogen right where we need it, so we don’t always have to move it far. Also, the more people use it, the cheaper it gets. Countries like Japan and South Korea are spending a lot of money on hydrogen, so if they think it’s worth it, maybe it really is!
Hydrogen isn’t perfect, but batteries aren’t either. Instead of picking just one, maybe we need both to make the world cleaner!
