Interesting points, thanks ade et al.
I guess there’s also an argument to hold a share with minimal capital growth but with 8% yield and a dormant SP it’s actually growing 8% a year and there’s the frequency of payments plus priority of the company to deliver on that which is how I see it currently.
Surely if they’re buying and selling holdings all the time then I understand the concept of dividend capture because I sometimes do it myself on account of the fact that the ‘without entitlement’ drop isn’t an exact science as share prices move around all the time, intraday, intra week etc and grabbing a 5p div, losing or gaining a couple of pence and moving to the next one iI’d say is maximising income from capital deployed or am I missing something as this is afterall an income fund?
Hi ade2a, I’m invested along with c.50 other holdings for income, mixed bag of trusts this being the largest currently so I’m not really worried about how so much as how much and it’s also about frequency of income hence the larger quantity and my tinkering around adds/reduces holdings according to whether they look low or high with base holdings in the ones I like and this one in particular ticks a box on geographical reach.
When all said and done since 2014 I’ve bought these as low as 289 and high as 328 and I’ve no doubt skimmed a few off around 350 in that time and taking into account the divs and SP I’ve probably done better here than the likes of VOD,tobaccos, big oils etc over a longer period return on equity although have done well on occasion with big oils the last year or so,along with some of the REITs I piled into start of this year.
In other words I’m comfortable with this holding but as you know curious rather than concerned at the loss of premium to nav recently and a paper profit or loss is almost vanity whereas the income is a bit of an obsession lol
I tend to look at a longer span because I’ve had these for years in varying amounts.
I know we’re only talking a few percent but that would still equate to 10p/15p on top of the SP as a very rough average going backwards?

LTI, on a longer period they’ve traded at a decent premium to nav but over the last few months it’s been on or around nav. I think there’s a mechanism called a Z score which shows the movement around nav but it’s wayyyyyyy over my understanding of these matters!
As long as the gas bottle doesn’t run out which it normally does in bad weather lol. Heading home shortly though. Have a good rest of the day mate.
Thankfully it’s on a decent concrete pad and the truck is in 4wd but even with that I’m avoiding the now boggy areas!
Typo…goldies!
That’s not good mate, we’re getting a good lashing up here too, chickens gone in of their own accord and Rosie opted for the hot water bottle in the caravan option…as have I! Thankfully have reasonable 4G up here and one of those power packs to keep the phone charged up!
A few goodies in the big mix don’t hurt
Time will tell, they seem to be hanging around the 9 mark and small spread, decent liquidity so why not really. If I was buying for the div in the goldies I’d be adding more centamin or poly metal which I’ve done okay on before and always seem to have some!
Also it’s a nasty wet day so inevitably I end up doing shares lol
Afternoon all, just bought a few of the Shanta ones as look quite oversold and cheap…my normal buy signal. I remember when pan African were around 8p and I didn’t bother. A small div but won’t be going bonkers on them!
Happy to join the debate if I feel I can add anything to it but as I mentioned I have no comprehension or interest in options trading so I just assume they know what they’re doing and ‘dividend washing’ is a term I’ve never heard of tbh.
If the SP was in its normal range there probably wouldn’t be anything to talk about so I’m all ears as to why we seem to have lost the premium to nav and for years now I’ve held these in varying quantities and they’ve always been well into ‘the threes’ barring covid etc extremes.
Someone brought some over for the ‘estate’ and they escaped, tough little ones and a bit like a massive staffie to look at. If you protect the young trees or grow even more of them it’s not a problem for us and it’s nice to have resident wildlife around….except the grasssnakes of course which thankfully clear off sharpish when you disturb them! There’s some cracking yields around particularly insurances and baccy of course, big oils too depending on when you bought them. Night again bud.
Well played on the short term trades Troj, yes ‘rough air ahead,we’re in for some chop’…guess which film that’s from!!
Not heard of that one, will have a look although did top up on centamin today, good but same sort of yield and a trust which I won’t bore you with.
The dieback of grass and leaves down certainly makes it all look barren!
Nom, they can be a nuisance with young trees and I know they’re not native or as graceful as ‘bambis’ but they’re more like pets to us so no eating munties off my land!! Have a good week you lot, catch up soon.
Hope everyone doing okay. Usual stuff with me,mostly divs and a couple of recoveries waiting to recover. More interestingly the weather all over the place so keeping the feeders going for the wild birds and the muntjac seem to be interested in the bird seed too at the moment, hens not happy with wet cold etc but g/f has put more hay in their quarters so they’re as happy as can be. Keeping a distance from politics and world events or I’ll get obsessed and start building a bunker lol.
Good to see a bit more interest here today, probably because I have t added for nearly a week lol.
Although the related ones like wood group, hunting, fishers,Pfc etc etc are all imo also stupidly low at the moment I’m surprised the market doesn’t seem to have latched onto the ‘green creds’ with this one…yet!! GLA

Surely if the income they receive covers the dividends they pay us bar a small shortfall as documented which is comfortably covered by the stated reserves there is no problem here?
I would think most invested here are for income and their income is from dividends,buying/selling holdings and options trading(aware of it but not au fait with it and frankly don’t care) and the only current issue is the SP which doesn’t want to play over the stated nav at the moment…..is there a fundamental change in SP because there’s a fundamental change in the way they operate or is it just a blip on China et al?
Personally I see no reason to reduce unless the SP is higher as I’ve mentioned in previous posts and every reason to add under 3 as has one of the Directors recently.
