When do the results of acidisation of an oil well show ?
The effects of oil well acidization can show very quickly, with immediate increases in production after the "spent" acid is flushed out. The initial and most significant results often appear within the first 30 minutes to a few hours of the treatment.
However, the full, long-term impact and sustained production increases are evaluated over a longer period.
Immediate effects
Rapid chemical reaction: When acid is injected into a well, it reacts quickly with the reservoir rock (in minutes) to dissolve mineral deposits and enlarge pores and natural fissures.
Swift permeability boost: Studies show that for high concentrations of acid, the most significant change in rock porosity and permeability happens within the first 10 minutes of treatment.
Immediate production increase: Once the "spent" acid and dissolved minerals are flushed back out of the well, operators can see an immediate increase in the oil flow rate. One case study showed an oil production rate that peaked 30 minutes after injection began.
Longer-term evaluation
The full success of an acidization treatment is typically measured over a longer period to see if the production increase is sustained. Evaluation can include:
Pressure tests: Analysis of well pressure data, both before and after the treatment, can confirm if the "skin factor" (a measure of flow restriction near the wellbore) has been successfully reduced.
Economic analysis: The long-term profitability of the treatment is measured by comparing the investment in acidization against the value of the increased oil production over a period of months or years.
Ongoing monitoring: Production rates are recorded over time to ensure that the improved flow is stable and that no new formation damage occurs.
