Officer Basin

Interest in the Australian Officer Basin is rising as it emerges as a major, largely underexplored frontier territory, with significant drilling activities scheduled for 2026.

Despite having numerous demonstrated oil and gas shows, the Officer Basin remains a frontier area with significant uncertainties, which has historically limited investment.

Geoscience Australia Study

The basin is currently the focus of a regional stratigraphic study under the Australian Government’s Exploring for the Future (EFTF) program to de-risk the area. The basin is recognized as containing Proterozoic to Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, similar to other major global basins that have yielded large hydrocarbon discoveries.

The push in the Officer Basin aligns with strengthened U.S.–Australia energy collaboration and a broader effort to secure future energy supplies.Increased demand, rising prices, and the need for new domestic supplies are driving interest in Western Australia's onshore basins.

This renewed interest in the Officer Basin highlights its potential to be a "generational discovery" for Australia, with activity in 2026 expected to significantly improve the understanding of the basin's resources.

U.S.-based Liberty Petroleum, through its affiliate Petro Quest Australia, holds a 20-million-acre position in the Officer Basin and is moving toward drilling in 2026. The project is touted as having higher material upside potential than 17 previous projects combined in Liberty’s 30-year history. Estimated at over

11 billion barrels of Oil.

Georgina Energy (GEX) has confirmed that it plans to drill the Hussar prospect re-entry well in Western Australia in Q3 2026.

The entire drilling, completion, and site infrastructure programme is fully funded by Harlequin Energy through a non-dilutive, structured offtake arrangement. Located in the Officer Basin, Western Australia, the project is considered one of the largest subsalt helium, hydrogen, and hydrocarbon prospects in onshore Australia, boasting a 300 km² areal closure.

The Council of Ministers met in the Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão Auditorium at the Ministry of Finance in Dili. After analysing the information presented and considering the need to ensure the continuity of the tender process and avoid delays in the implementation of the Tasi Mane Project, specifically the SSB and the Zumalai–Natarbora Highway, the Council of Ministers decided to take note of the information presented by the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, regarding the content of the letter from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, concerning the highest-ranked company for Lot 2.

It also decided to authorise the CNA to commence negotiations with the highest-ranked Chinese company for Lot 2, and to continue to follow up, monitor, and confirm the completion of the Chinese regulatory procedures necessary for the transfer of funds and the execution of projects abroad. END
