Though have noticed that around 2:50 on a lot of days, there is a step change and it either drops (cliff) or shoots up.

There you go.....the UK market sold/MMs dropped it 2-2:30 and then on US open.....boing they've been buying in. Now and again they do the opposite of their norm!
