It is nothing to do with being decrepit (note the correct spelling) or being corrupt. The confidence of the markets was spooked by the unexpected collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank, leading investors to wonder if this is a one-off or whether there are other listed companies in dire straits, but that we just do not know yet. So the risk premium of being invested in the market is consequently raised. Perhaps by as early as tomorrow, investors will recover their collective nerves and jump back in attracted by the lower prices and a desire to pick up a bargain!

Why has the BP share price ramped up so much this afternoon? Crude oil price is up, but not by that much! is it the takeover talk?

This morning saw a strong US Dollar against the UK Pound, thus sending the price of Brent crude down, thus hitting the oilers negatively.

I feel that BP is missing a trick here! Perhaps it could still go hard looking for and exploiting new and old gas and oil sites, but that a percentage of the nett profits would be used to invest in green investments. That way, a bit like the Medici in Florence who used the profits from banking to create many public works of art to whitewash the sin of money-lending, BP can maximise current profits and secure its long term viability.

If BP "is a buy and hold stock", then why are you a buy and sell investor?

With every day missed, it means bigger buys later, providing a good floor for the share price.

Just wondering why the BP share price has been so strong these last few days?

Could it be the results that were reported? Well, we had previously great results, but without this upwards push.

Are people buying on the rumours of a possible takeover? Hard to say.

Is it the increase of the dividends? That must have helped, but it was not a spectacular increase was it?

The price of crude oil is high, but way off what it was, so unlikely to be that is it?

Any thoughts?

What exactly is the prediction, please? Bid amount? Closing share price?

I was considering selling half of BP holdings to lock in the superb gains thus far today. However, with the ex dividend date in just a few days, February 16th, I shall wait and reconsider, though it is likely to cost me!

I find it hard to believe that the US markets could push the share price much higher...

Neil Collins said on the Sky News business show that he thought that Shell was too big for a takeover by Exxon, but that BP, being one-quarter of its size would be attractive yo Exxon as a target!!

Hypothetically speaking, were Exxon to make a public approach to buy BP, how much would be added to the BP share price? One quid, two or even more as an instant reaction?
