As someone brought up in South Belfast as an Englishman I can tell you the broad section of the community both middle and working classes wanted peace. BUT, the republican gangs , and that's what they were, criminals , hiding behind the United Ireland banner started the trouble. It was not helped by segregated Schools and unfair distribution of jobs to Catholics.
All sections of the protestant community were united in wanting to remain in the United Kingdom.
Criminal gangs not religious freedom fighters were behind it. Roddy Doyle writes very well about the troubles not just in the 60's and 70's but back during the formation of Eire.
