(Alliance News) - Stock prices in London opened mostly higher on Tuesday with banks among the best performers in the FTSE 100 following hawkish comments from the US Federal Reserve.

The US central bank is prepared to raise interest rates by bigger steps than the quarter-point hike announced last week if needed to contain "much too high" inflation, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said Monday.

Rishi Sunak has pledged to “stand by” struggling households as he faces mounting pressure to alleviate the cost of living crisis.

The Chancellor appeared to hint he could cut fuel duty in his spring statement on Wednesday in a bid to help reduce the growing burden on families.

Soaring petrol prices, rocketing energy bills, widespread inflation and a hike in National Insurance contributions from next month are all piling pressure on household budgets.

Labour said it would back a fuel duty cut but called for further action, including a windfall tax on oil and gas companies.

NEW YORK, March 21 (Reuters) - Federal funds rate futures on Monday raised the chances of a half percentage-point tightening by the Federal Reserve at the next policy meeting in May, after hawkish comments from Fed Chair Jerome Powell.

Powell said on Monday the Fed must move "expeditiously" to bring too-high inflation to heel, and will, if needed, use bigger-than-usual interest rate hikes to do so.

In late afternoon trading, rate futures showed a 63% chance that the Fed will raise interest rates by 50 basis points in May to 0.75%-1.00% , less than a week after the Fed hiked by a quarter-point to 0.25%-0.50%.

"Fed Chair Powell was a more hawkish than we, and the market expected, emphasizing the need to attack inflation rather than take a cautious approach due to the various uncertainties over growth," said Action Economics in its latest blog.

Don't think my posting the article condones the actions of these people. They are breaking the law and should be prosecuted. It is not illegal to own more than one property, and this has always been a popular vehicle for providing pension income to people who have worked hard and saved all their life and invested this into property to provide pension income. But it doe's highlight the problems this is creating in the more picturesque tranquil communities where young local people who have lived there all their life are priced out of the market for buying. It is more important than ever that the Government take this onboard and step up efforts to get schemes for affordable housing in these area's for first time buyers.

The rising cost of housing is giving rise to more instances of vandalism to second homes that are vacant most of the year and only occupied when the absent owner goes there for a holiday. There is a lot of pent up frustration with locals unable to afford to buy a house in the community where they live, and many are homes unoccupied most of the year.
