Indeed, it was such a very brief glance at Wikipedia that you only selectively copied into your post information which was biased to your socialist viewpoint in an attempt to blame the Tories for Austerity. So I will extend your "short history lesson" with information from the same page of Wikipedia that you copied from, the relevant part which you DELIBERATELY omitted, which was:
" A UK government budget surplus in 2001–2 was followed by many years of budget deficit[10] and after the financial crisis of 2007–2008 a period of economic recession began in the country. The first austerity measures were introduced in late 2008."
Now, remind me, when did Tony Blairs Labour party come into power? Let me jog your memory, it was 1997! And when did the Conservatives come back into power? Oh yes, 2010. They had to continue to run with the Austerity that Labour introduced to clear up the mess that resulted from 13 years of mismanagement of the economy by a Labour Government.
