I agree with you, that is very likely the case. There's another thing I think could have contributed:
The 120 patients are almost certainly middle class, most of which will have had some connection to SNG (mothers, fathers uncles, aunties, friends of shareholders, or have some link to Soton Uni). We know that poverty/inequality and the lifestyles that go along with inequality are a major driver of severe illness also. If these 120 patients were completely randomly chosen it could well have provided quite different data...
