Crude oil from fields in eastern Mongolia
Several key players and fields are involved in crude oil production in eastern Mongolia:
Block XX: This is a significant exploitation area in the far eastern part of Mongolia where the AIM-listed Mongolian oil company Petro Matad holds a 100% operated interest. They discovered the Heron and Gazelle fields here in 2019. Production from the Heron-1 well commenced in late 2024. Block XX production is transported to nearby facilities on Block XIX for processing, storage, and export under an oil sales agreement with PetroChina.
Block XIX: Operated by PetroChina, this block is adjacent to Block XX and houses the Toson Uul field complex, the country's main producing oil field complex. Crude oil from this area is currently trucked to a pipeline terminal in China.
Tamtsag Basin: This basin in eastern Mongolia is historically the most productive part of the country. It extends into northeast China as the Hailar Basin. The Tamtsag Basin currently produces approximately 17,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd) from several small fields, with the crude exported south to China's Hohhot refinery.
Heron Field: Located within Block XX and operated by Petro Matad, this field has an estimated 190 million barrels of oil in place. The Heron-1 well tested at a maximum rate of 821 barrels of oil per day.
Gobi Bear Prospect: Also located within Block XX, this prospect has estimated mean in-place oil resources of 307 million barrels. An exploration well, Gobi Bear-1, commenced drilling in September 2024 to target this prospect.
Mongol Refinery: Under construction near Sainshand, this refinery will have an initial capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum and aims to process crude oil from eastern Mongolia, reducing the country's reliance on imported refined products. A 530 km pipeline is being built to transport the crude from the Tamtsag basin to the refinery.
