JP Morgan analysts followed that up earlier this month with the call that while Jadar was appealing at the strategic level because it would give Rio exposure to lithium and the growing EV market, based on the projects "challenging'' economics, it believed "Rio may look to delay its development".

It estimated a modest internal rate of return of 14% on a US$1.5 billion capital cost and a lithium carbonate equivalent price of $9500/t, which is about where LCE is now after tumbling from $13,500/t in the March quarter last year.

Rio itself admits it is not yet wedded to the development of Jadar, with CEO J-S Jacques saying recently that the development study was still 18 months off (2024 has been flagged as likely first production).

"I think there are still a few questions for us, as I said last year," J-S said.

"One is the question about the market, and we are becoming more and more comfortable with the market. The other one is about the technical aspects. The key issue is not really the mining, it's more the processing.

"There are 26 steps in order to be able to extract the lithium. So it looks like more a chemical process than a mining process. So studies are underway and in the next 18 months we'll come back to the market and we'll take it from there."
