Gasification is proven, using homogeneous feedstock. However using mixed waste is fraught with problems - why pretty much every waste gasification project in the UK has failed, some spectacularly such as the Air Products project in Teesside (which I was involved in, in a former life)
Getting syngas is only half the challenge. You then need to remove all the tars, which can foul the FT system. This is an area with even less running time. I did a piece of work on syngas tars many years ago and the only real way of getting rid of them was using plasma gasification, which is extremely costly to operate. This was for use in reciprocating desiel engines that are less sensitive to tars build up, but still suffer if there’s too much of it.

Hi Sean. There’s no evidence of VLS undertaking any such small scale demo on waste feedstock.
Fractional distillation/FCC units, whilst once being lab scale, are simple step processes. What VLS are proposing here is a multi step process, using very different pieces of integrated technology. Your analogy of lab to scale for an FCC can be compared to VLS reactors, but not the whole waste to fuel process.

Agree that there aren’t many ways to decorbise aviation other than green fuels. However, there are many ways to produce green fuels - indeed they are already being produced today, using waste oils.

Sean, I’d say it’s a very good analogy. They really haven’t built anything, or have no experience, as a company, in building such large scale projects. The Oaklahoma project was a demo of their tech only, not the full process., so only the VLS science is sound.The waste to fuel process hasn’t been done and with Fulcrum facing delays, a working example is miles off. Despite the drive from governments, the fact is that a company with no development experience is seeking £500m to build a project that has never been built by anyone before. They really need to build at least one house to prove their mettle (and the process) before embarking on the housing estate.

In my opinion Loosley, it’s got a lot to do with the fact that VLS is a technology coming and not a development company. Lots of experience with designing and producing a product , but zero developing large scale projects. Imagine a company that has been making nice bricks for 15 years, suddenly wants to build large scale housing development, without ever having built a wall. This is probably why they are struggling to attract development partners in my opinion.

Valid points Sean. It might be a drop in the ocean, but any investment still needs to be justified and protected to the maximum possible extent to ensure shareholders remain happy. VLS will need to do some convincing to get this half billion. They’ve not managed to do this with Mississippi as yet...

Sean, there is no such UK mandate for sustainable jet fuel. There is a carbon tax that comes into force that may provide an incentive to use biofuels, how there is no mandate.
In my opinion, and to ref. Thurgs comment earlier, I just don’t think financing will be forthcoming. It’s too much, too soon in VLS’s new career as a project developer and the banks will pick up on this. However, to balance that argument, there is a LOT of momentum to lower the carbon footprint of aircraft that there might be enough appetite to move this forward.

Was an interesting article. The only slight tickle is that the there was a mention of a demonstration plant and a sample of fuel. As far as what has been mentioned before by VLS, that sample was made using woody biomass, not household waste, so a little misleading. But, I’ll let him off seeing as though the rest of the article was good.

It is indeed Steve. I just think they’ll wait until the dust has settled, then start announcing ‘green’ initiatives.

This £1 does not relate the share price of VLS. It basically means they get a third of the AltAlto project company for a £1 each.

With the BA job woes and Shell cutting its forecast and writing off billions, I suspect the VLS tie up is low down the list at the moment. They might wait until the dust has settle to announce something.

If there is any positive news, VLS would be telling you.

The Government backing for this project is not new. Its been around since July 2018, but back then, Grant Shapps didn't stand on a podium and broadcast it.
When the Government first backed this project in 2018m the sp was 37p. Its now 9p.
Again, this recent increase is mainly on the back of high profile announcements rather than fundamentals. The real price, in my opinion, should reflect the real progress of the project, which is following the granting of PP and the top up from BA/Shell. The rest is hot air.
