Never been into unions myself, what has struck me here is that they (the unions) appear to be more in support of the companies than the employees - well that's my take on things - given that they (the unions) wanted the workers to "work off" any payments that they received due to site closures, all to be repaid by year end, by working unpaid overtime. Could only envisage that resulting in unrest, so maybe they'll backtrack on such an agreement. Investing in contracting construction companies became a no-no for me years ago, as they ventured into service provision - resulting in a lot of outsourcing and debt mountains - instead of just sticking to what they were best at imv.

Wids, yes but the not understanding carries its own share of problems. i.e. my adult, mentally impaired cousin in the US who relies on us for so many years since his parents departed this world ... not understanding resulted in 2 hours of consoling yesterday as to why he can't see us, we can't take him on his vacation and so on and forth - not just yesterday, every day for a few weeks. That on FaceTime, every day since this situation arose is soul destroying, watching him weep cos he just doesn't understand. I know/we know/he does not, and never will understand. The little tots are the only ones who can live in blissful ignorance. Sorry to learn of those you grew up with. Our own mortality sure hits us in the face when our own age group are saying adios. I believe the G20 finance ministers also had a virtual meeting on the 31st March. All of us shareholders do not have a contract or document that would stand up in law as to what our dividend entitlements are, do we? The risks are our own. I really doubt very much that the powers that be are ignorant to the fact that many shareholders globally will be suffering financially as a result of the actions that have had to be taken, by operating prudently to save our economy. If it all comes tumbling down like a pack of cards, it will end up costing us all far more than our dividends.

Oxo42, as you are probably aware that my view was always that dividends and bonuses and anything above basic have to be stopped/suspended - not just the banks, but for all the companies that will struggle as a result of this crisis. Take personal and the associated loss out of it, stand back and view it from a company and the great unknown perspective. If I personally am going to fight - for something worth fighting for - then I have to know or be able to interpret the law correctly that governs the same. Further, if I'm prepared to act for, or represent, or advocate for another - and believe me, I've done more than my share share, in my lifetime - then I need to understand how I believe the judiciary would rule. Under the current extra-ordinary circumstances I do not believe that fighting the suspending of dividends carries credence. A judge would surely seek to apply what is written in the Articles and the actions taken in light of the extra-ordinary circumstances, globally to arrive at a conclusion. So is the fight worth fighting? For me, no. For you, well that is your decision, as it is for all others.
