Only if the company can prove he did so intentionally and wilfully. Otherwise all the company can do is sack him... On the other hand the company directors-chairman could also be sued by some of their own directors for not sacking the ceo if the ceo was being detrimental to the company and they were aware of it and didn't sack him

I think Mr Buck is not an idiot. He would have had a ready-made raise project handy for a raise not only in thus occasion but for any... But Let's hope a raise is not needed this time

To navigate in a corrupt situation you describe, in which the whole system is geared against, and in which you have no recourse to (incorrupt) legal framework yes, it's possible to succeed, but you can only succeed using and manipulating the corruption around you. But by using corruption you become as guilty as the ones you are fighting against. There might be plenty of ceos around maybe much more capable then Mr Buck, but if they are that more capable they will have plenty of job opportunities elsewhere and anyway very unlikely to accept a job in which they would have to use corruption to fight corruption. Mr Buck is trapped and cornered, he is just trying what he thinks his best to navigate a desperate situation
