@Bonxie - the 2 strategies are not being delivered in unison. NESO is building the pylons/bootstraps regardless of locational charging - locational charging is going to cost end-consumers more as the electricity still needs to be transported, it will just penalise - the field of dreams hypothesis is just that. Chemicals, Glass, Cement, Metal Ore smelting, Steel Production is not going to move to North Scotland and then be unable to transport raw materials/finished product for periods because the roads are snowed in, not to mention that the transport links are inadequate anyway. If we are talking about data centres I despair, will double energy requirements for a solution to a problem we didn't have. And will just need more cables for data transfer (ultimately data transfer still uses cables).

We can get there if we push for it. The problem with debating this is I never said no Pylons, you will always need some but depending on whether they are HV or EHV is the issue on size and number. If we try to push vast amounts of electricity around the country that requires large numbers of EHV Pylons.

But NESO's plans for Pylons all across East Anglia, Bootstraps from Scotland to Mid/North England and a swathe of Pylons across Wales - is just vandalism. HS2 is a blight on the countryside as it is (I regularly drive past the destruction caused), NESO's plans make HS2 look tame in comparison.

I limit my own impact on the environment as much as possible - give me BMWi or aa Toyota or Hyundai and a refuelling network and I'll cut my CO2 from driving as well.

I'm not on the fence Bilbo, I've clearly said Hydrogen (as Tesla admits) is the energy store vector which needs CCGT to create the electricity, no need to build new pylons (which are prone to wind damage leaving people without power just when they need it) just refurbish the existing Gas Transportation system. It is workable (town gas used to contain a lot of hydrogen we didn't worry about it pre-conversion). This is a clash of ideologies that is leaving no room for rational debate and it is being driven by lobbyists with vested interests.

Labelling NIMBYism is used too often to shut down debate on what the best enduring solution might be. Electrify everything, pillage the countryside and concrete over it, is not the best solution from my perspective. That isn't NIMBYism.

I saw an article yesterday (BBC I think) talking about locational charging lowering the costs for consumers in Scotland and implying that was because with locational charging the wind turbines off the Scottish coast wouldn't have to be curtailed and so more efficient - intellectually incontinent because those wind turbines can't be picked up and dropped into the middle of Manchester/Liverpool or Birmingham or London. It is just a stupid idea that will benefit a minority and cost the majority a lot.

I'm not concerned about the Fukushima downside, Britain is not prone to earthquakes of sufficient magnitude or tsunami; but it is , now, the wrong technology at the wrong time in the wrong place. Don't get me wrong, I recognise the need to Nuclear as baseload generation, but we are replacing old, smaller units with large output that needs to be transmitted around the country with a grid not fit for purpose. So bad in fact, that some vested interests think locational charging is a good idea (it isn't) at the same time as these huge generators are still being sited in immovable locations. Hydrogen can be transported to where the generation is needed with less cost and without fleecing end consumers.

DESNZ is stuck in the past.

It is only a continuation of a policy limping along since 2008/9 when British Energy (the Nuclear Generator operator) was sold to EDF.

Hinkley Point C was originally supposed to be generating in 2017 (if you read what was stated at the time), Sizewell not long after, but the Government wasn't prepared to fund it then so tried to get private investment. At the time, we had SIzewell, Hinkley B, Hunterston, Torness, Heysham, Hartlepool, Dungeness B. Dungeness, Hunkley B and Hunterston B are now being decommisioned, Hartlepool, Heysham & Torness between 2026-2028.

I'd rather have seen a push for Hydrogen creation to provide dispactchable generation, rather than money on Nuclear that is a money pit and prone to massive cost overruns.

That is true IKFA - not arguing that point particularly, just repeating the point that we both agree on - they are irrelevant. Look at it this way, they haven't been exiting and the share price is up 130% over the month - so it wasn't the shorts holding it down. That's all I mean. As LL says they still have to leave at some point.

Cheers Eastwood - not a surprise. Why would they have? I imagine they made a bucket-load of cash last week to hedge their position until well over £1.

I still say that they don't matter though.
