It is only a continuation of a policy limping along since 2008/9 when British Energy (the Nuclear Generator operator) was sold to EDF.
Hinkley Point C was originally supposed to be generating in 2017 (if you read what was stated at the time), Sizewell not long after, but the Government wasn't prepared to fund it then so tried to get private investment. At the time, we had SIzewell, Hinkley B, Hunterston, Torness, Heysham, Hartlepool, Dungeness B. Dungeness, Hunkley B and Hunterston B are now being decommisioned, Hartlepool, Heysham & Torness between 2026-2028.
I'd rather have seen a push for Hydrogen creation to provide dispactchable generation, rather than money on Nuclear that is a money pit and prone to massive cost overruns.
