The Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) has raised an alarm over the worsening crisis in the country’s primary textile sector, warning that continued inaction could soon force many mills to shut down. Well it’s becoming a bit clearer now,US tariffs are more about Bangladesh security concerns!!….I’m not sure what that relates too but I suspect they are very upset about this very cosy relationship with China ahead……

Trade discussions between Bangladesh and the United States concluded without a resolution. Both nations agreed on certain points during the three-day meeting. However, some disagreements persist. Further inter-ministerial discussions are planned. Representatives from both countries will meet again soon. The US President had earlier imposed a 35% tariff on Bangladeshi goods, effective August 1, 2025.

Years ago a marine biologist friend of mine was looking for funding to research grey seal breeding in the waters around the UK….it was very hard work,tons of paperwork where ,what ,why and when so he changed the paper to “Environmental/ocean warming effects on breeding grey seals in waters around the UK”…….the blank cheques came pouring in 😂……..so if you flip that to Bangladesh the energy situation over there is dire,if you wave that renewable flag the loans/grants for this stuff comes thick and fast…tweak the democratic situation and I think China has all the renewable loans/grants Bangla needs……in return they must provide a similar cheap fossil fuel electricity environment to manufacture the panels?…massive workforce,domestic resources = cheap lecky and Bangla is on its way out of the hole…….imho it will take a generation for things to improve but they can do it 👍

Little article primarily about the Indian lng/coal transition…..it’s not really happening because of the cost implications……Bangladesh is saddled with these debts to lng supplies but the Indian govt is having none of it…….I’m sure Fouzel and the bnp are very aware this debt on import fuel cannot carry on

Modernization of the industrial, power, mineral and energy sectors and establishment of good governance:

All old laws including the immunity law will be repealed in the power, energy and mineral sectors and the ongoing corruption in purchasing electricity from quick rental power plants that are against the public interest will be stopped in order to prevent hemorrhage in the national economy. Appropriate measures will be taken to avoid import dependence and to generate renewable and mixed energy-dependent electricity and to discover and extract neglected gas and mineral resources.

Investment-friendly policies will be adopted for the development of the industrial sector and to attract domestic and foreign investment. Encouragement, opportunities and incentives will be given to the investment of expatriate Bangladeshis. A comprehensive industrial infrastructure will be built nationwide in a planned manner.

All these articles have a fossil fuel lock that is impossible to open…..the articles spread out to add paragraphs of “transition “….”greenwash”……”tigers”and there’s always a “renewable “ slant……most of this crud would be killed dead if domestic resources extraction were ramped up massively……the energy costs would hit the ground running on a par with India and China…😂…..it’s as if they don’t want 100,s of millions of prospective entrepreneurs not to have access to some of the cheapest energy in the world!!…..

Coal: the double edged sword

In addition to nuclear power, Bangladesh is rapidly constructing coal-fired capacity to anchor baseload generation. Payra at 1.32 GW and Matarbari at 1.2 GW are the flagship mega‑plants, built with Chinese and Japanese aid respectively.

Meanwhile, Rampal, a 1.32-GW Indo‑Bangladeshi venture, also helps underpin domestic energy security even as concerns flood environmental circles due to its proximity to the environmentally important Sundarbans – an area of mangrove forest home to around 100 Bengali tigers.

Japan’s climate‑finance intervention at Matarbari, and advanced pollution controls at Payra, however, are seen as attempts to green‑wash what is fundamentally a fossil-based project. However, analysts question whether more coal is wise. A 2025 Daily Star editorial warned that yet another coal unit would exacerbate overcapacity as baseload margin already hovers at ~61%. At the same time it would contradict environmental aims .
