RE: Phulbari15 Jul 2025 13:49
I have been around this phulbari project for a couple of years now and thrown the sink at the research to reassure myself of the potential of this prospect…
Just a few bits that may be of interest, Bangladesh electricity generated with coal represents about 16% of the total electricity in the country, the majority of that fuel is imported from Indonesia 3 thousand miles away, that fuel has been very poor quality to date and to be firing that sort of stuff through these ultra modern super critical power stations has proven to be false economy…..that fuel fouls up the super generators and emissions are excessive.
Back to phulbari coal, that fuel is some of the best quality coal in the world and it’s use in the new super critical generation units would have immediate benefits, better efficiency, better for the environment(abolishing big % of import costs and co2 shipping) equals lower costs.
Some have argued Bangladesh is on a green path with various articles?….yea Bangladesh has been on a green path for years!….it’s fashionable and gets grants and loans, but to put it simply if Bangladesh go green by 20% by 2030 that would not touch domestic resources with a barge pole!
Nearly all Bangladesh super critical coal power units are new…..some have well over 20yrs left and billions have been invested in this infrastructure, the first thing to be affected by greener politics imho would be oil/diesel and expensive lng imported gas…..
Basically solar/hydro/wind will never step on the toes of domestic coal in Bangladesh…..they would be companions in a boosted up new mixed energy policy
Just a few thoughts of my own, please do your own research, please feel free to add your own input 👍
