The interim government's Planning Advisor issued a warning of a possible recession in Bangladesh. He singled out the lack of private investment as the major factor that would be contributing to the impending recession (FE, November 26). However, just two weeks before the Advisor's warning on November 11, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank assured the country that even if economic growth slowed down, there was no threat of recession in the country.

So, the signals for the recession in Bangladesh look mixed. However, since the Advisor gave his opinion at the end of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting held on November 25 chaired by the Chief Advisor, it can be considered as the informed view of the government.

He said that if the current situation continued without any new private investment and almost stagnant public sector, development expenditure would result in a recession. He further added that the private sector was not showing any interest in investment and the interest rate had gone up. He also said that economic stagnation in the country was due to inflation and price hikes of essentials.

Joining as chief guest, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, said there should be an investigation into the reasons behind this situation [of excessive cost in power production], to identify who was behind such deals and why they did so.

He said, “We’ve proposed a 31-point reform plan. More than 50 political parties also agreed with us in this accord. From the BNP, it has been said that we would form a national government including everyone after the elections. Those who’re with 31-point and made the proposals will implement it with everyone’s united accord. It’s a big commitment as forming national government after elections is our commitment to the nation.”

Citing his recent experience in dealing with the country’s bureaucracy, Energy Adviser Dr Fouzul Kabir Khan said he feels like fighting with his own shadow.

“I am fighting with my own shadow, even though I was part of this bureaucracy,” he said while addressing a seminar titled ‘Predictable Energy Pricing and Supply Stability’ at the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) in Dhaka city on Saturday.

Fouzul Kabir mentioned that state-owned Petrobangla has sought clearance from the Planning Ministry to waive the mandatory feasibility study provision for implementing drilling projects at different onshore gas fields.

“This feasibility study needs to be conducted by a third party, which requires one year for gathering necessary data about a field. We didn’t want to bypass the feasibility study, but all the data is available with Petrobangla, and it should be handled within the organization itself,” he said.

Fouzul Kabir also pointed out that if a year is needed for the feasibility study, how can the job be completed quickly? “This is a time-buying tactic, and we should raise our voices against such a time-consuming provision.”

Jamaat’s Nayeeb-e-Amir Mujibur Rahman, Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher, Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, and other senior leaders were present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami are currently visiting China at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC). The 14-member delegation from Jamaat-e-Islami consists of its Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.

Earlier, four leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) paid a 10-day visit to China from November 7 to 16 at the invitation of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

US Congressman Brad Sherman issued a statement on Tuesday calling on Bangladesh's interim government to protect its Hindu minority and address the ongoing protests by Hindus and minority communities over recent attacks and harassment.

Sherman called for an investigation from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, regarding killings and other abuses during the unrest that followed the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

I know some of these India news articles have a pro Muslim slant but because Yunus is shutting down his own press of Bangladesh it leaves him wide open to these scathing attacks…….it was another ill thought up idea probably via one of his student ministers or a Grammeen bank crony……..the political parties have the upper hand now,they should force a roadmap albeit a month or 12 months,they should shut smiler down on this green crusade and get it truly costed up against using its own resources,the poor Bangladeshi people don’t care about the polar bears and thawing ice,they are a simple country with hardly any co2 output and if one of these new ministers to be could promise reliable electricity at cost and a market full of cheap basic food that would be half of the countries problems solved,business would prosper if lecky was cheap and reliable……..time for one of these new ministers to stand up…..

i think these indian newspapers have hit the nail on the head,yunus was on a one man crusade with the islamist minority and it’s come unstuck,his regime was buckling and he’s had charges dropped on rahman and now he has to talk with all the parties involved in his electoral crusade……this can only be a good outcome and it might reign in some of the cuckoo policies?

yunus has so far enjoyed support only from hardline islamist groups like the jamaat-e-islami, but these groups have never polled more than 10 per cent of the popular vote. so if he has to hang on to power without going for elections, he needs a wider political support base.

so, yunus is doing what bangladesh’s two military rulers, generals ziaur rahman (tarique rahman's father) and hussein muhammed ershad, did in the 1980s following the ouster of the country's first awami league government headed by sheikh mujibur rahman, who was killed (along with almost his entire family) in the august 1975 coup. like the two generals, yunus is trying to rally the anti-secular political forces across a wide spectrum, with a sprinkling of opportunists from civil society behind him.

in effect, despite his liberal facade, the nobel laureate is actually presiding over a transition that is taking bangladesh towards an islamist republic established by pampering fundamentalist elements capable of stifling the syncretic bengali culture and the secular linguistic nationalism that led to the country’s violent breakaway from ****stan in 1971.

Four months after a student uprising deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, most Bangladeshis want new elections within a year, despite strong support for the interim government's reform agenda, according to a new survey.

The survey, sponsored by Voice of America and conducted by a Bangladeshi research firm in late October, found that while 65.9% of respondents back ongoing government reforms, more than 61.1% want new polls held within 12 months.

The findings suggest that many Bangladeshis desire reforms and elections equally — elections to restore democracy after 15 years of Hasina's increasingly authoritarian rule and reforms to strengthen institutions weakened under her watch.

"I think that people definitely want elections, and at the same time, people definitely want reforms," said Zillur Rahman, a journalist and political commentator based in the capital, Dhaka. "This government would do well to focus only on the reforms related to elections."
