New Delhi, Nov 24 (IANS): The Ministry of Coal on Monday said that a "historic milestone" has been achieved in India's journey towards energy self-sufficiency, with commercial coal mines recording their highest-ever single-day dispatch of 0.617 million tonnes (MT) on November 24.

“This represents a remarkable 36 per cent growth compared to the dispatch of 0.453 MT of coal on the same day last year, demonstrating the sector's robust growth under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative and marks a significant stride towards realizing the Viksit Bharat vision," a Ministry statement said.

The record dispatch comprised 0.536 MT to the power sector and 0.081 MT to the non-power sector, showcasing the robust performance across multiple sectors of the economy. The monthly progressive dispatch has reached 12.810 MT, with a substantial year-to-date dispatch of 116.373 MT, highlighting the sustained growth in coal production and distribution

Energy expert and BUET professor Dr. Ijaz Hossain said efficient management, including reducing losses from gas theft and pilferage, could recover an estimated 60 mmcfd.

Additionally, fully utilising the capacity of floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) could secure an extra 1,100 mmcfd, while accelerating the installation of rooftop and grid-tied solar power systems could help offset the demand for fuel oil," he said in a seminar on Saturday.

In the medium to long term, he recommend diversifying energy sources to include more coal and imported electricity, reducing VAT and sales taxes on energy, and enhancing domestic gas exploration. Reforms in the power sector, such as prioritising uninterrupted electricity supply for industrial feeders, could also stabilise production.

Bangladesh's rapid industrialisation was built on the foundation of cheap and accessible gas. The erosion of that foundation currently threatens not only the country's economic stability but also its ability to generate employment and curb inflation, according to Dr. Ijaz Hossain.

He said without swift and coordinated intervention, the energy crisis could deepen, leaving Bangladesh's once-thriving industries in jeopardy.

The prevailing gas supply scarcity is continuing to take its toll on industrial production, resulting in losses faced by different industries.

Bangladesh's industrial backbone is weakening under the crushing weight of an energy crisis that shows no signs of abating, according to industrialists in Bangladesh.

Industries that once relied on affordable and abundant supply of gas now face both scarcity and unaffordable rates, leaving many to become defaulters or shut the factories entirely.

Industry leaders and experts have called for immediate and sustained action to alleviate the crisis. They said diverting gas supply to critical industrial zones such as Narayanganj, Ashulia, Gazipur, and Savar could provide a temporary relief.

They also urged the government to act decisively to prevent further economic fallout, as sectors from textiles to ceramics struggle to stay afloat.

BNP senior leader Hafizuddin Ahmed on Sunday expressed the hope that the interim government will hold the national election within the next six months.

Speaking at a discussion meeting, he also said holding the election within this timeframe is possible through discussions with political parties.

“We have many expectations from the current government. We believe that the government will gift the nation an election within the next six months," the BNP leader said.

So smiler has once again said if the parties want elections they will get them,consensus has changed with the top parties…..jamaat now want election timeline alongside reforms,that is same as bnp who only want the necessary reforms now……I think messing with anything other than the basic reforms leading to elections is asking for trouble as it’s unconstitutional…….the wiggle room for the cuckoo government is reducing weekly,Bangladeshis are getting restless about the situation with food/power/jobs and that could get messy?

Muhammad Yunus: The quicker the consensus, the quicker the process. If there’s no consensus, the election train will come to a halt. Different issues are being discussed. For instance, the number of women’s reserved seats and how they will be elected. These will have to be resolved. If political parties tell us there’s no need for reforms, and instead they want elections, we will do that too. How long it will take to complete the reforms depends on the parties. If no one gets ready for the election and yet insists on holding the election before the reforms, we will do that. Who are we to stand in the way? Everyone wanted reforms, but if that’s to be done, time must be given. If they give us time, it will happen. If not, we will hold the election.

Muhammad Yunus: I’m urging them for reforms. I’m saying that we have got an opportunity, please use it. If all political parties decide today that reforms are not necessary and want elections, then who am I to carry out these reforms?

Eternal question at the moment is should the awami league be allowed to join the election?……I’ve made my opinions clear on this and it is simply banning any party defeats the whole democracy flag waving exercise……sure as eggs are eggs if they were banned lots of awami would go over to bnp etc so it doesn’t make sense that bnp are defending awami right to join the election…..?…….I likened it to the build up to a big boxing match,the big talk the showmanship the uncertainty of the outcome then on the fight day the one with the biggest voice usually gets hammered…..this is what’s needed,expose awami to fair elections then beat them at the polls and it’s over……sure as anything it’s done…….a few what ifs maybes but it should work?

This would not matter much if, as politicians who are on board keep telling us, “transitioning” to clean energy will be easy and already makes good economic sense. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Solar panels only work when the sun is shining and unless the weather obliges, wind turbines stop turning, which is a relief for the birds they regularly slaughter but a headache for energy-producers who rely on them. What is more, the Chinese (who dominate the solar-panel business) get the energy they use to make the many they flog off to worried Westerners from old-fashioned fossil fuels, thereby bringing the overall reduction in greenhouse gases nearer to zero. Perhaps this will change thanks to new technologies, but until then, going green will continue to be an expensive luxury.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has largely finalised its proposals for reforming the constitution, election commission and the police force.

They laid emphasis on three key issues – a bicameral parliament, limiting an individual to two terms as prime minister, and balancing power between the prime minister and the president. The constitution reform proposals will soon be submitted to the reform commission chief, Ali Riaz.

The decision was made in a meeting of the party’s highest policy making body, national standing committee, on Thursday. The BNP leaders discussed updates on the party’s internal reform committees, in addition to the interim government’s reform commissions.
