Getafgrip, absolutely technology will accelerate the change, however currently that is costing significant capex and research monies, with little payback and reward for the companies concerned at present. That cash is not a never ending amount, without more significant take up of EV's (overcom8ng peoples hesitancy and wait and see approach) i see that investable cashpile reducing. Manufacturers wont keep investing if they aint selling..
My family members battery manufacturing/supplier company, and it is a well established substantial buisiness, only has a couple of hybrids in its large vehicle fleet, with no 100% ev vehicles - that tells me everything i need to know!
Your final point on on miners, 'how green is green' if you will is very valid and once people start to research this properly, rather than rely on the spin from government, ER, Greta, media etc etc then the true cost of this electrical/EV push will become plain.
Who wants a mine in the back garden? or worse still wants to ship minerals from all over the world? Wont go into the aspirations of billions in the third world to improve their lot, might be able to pay for a twenty year old toyota but certainly not a EV like a Tesla (maybe why china manufacturers are churning out cheap EV's).
Oil will be with us for a good while yet. Cheap, plentiful, infrastructure/tech in place worldwide.
I would suggest the better approach from the environmental lobby, would have been to limit the consumption of fuel by placing tighter controls on the miles per gallon of vehicles made, i.e. ban gas guzzlers. my wifes Polo does 70mpg, my much larger vehicle considerably less, if i could be encouraged to change id half my usage and hence pollution, maybe that is the way to go rather than produce equally non green vehicles that cost a fortune and aint fit for my usage?
