The Bank of England is independent of the government so long as it does what the government wants. The Bank of England Act of 1998 provides a Chancellor with the option of overruling the decisions of the Bank of England. That means that the Bank simply has a veneer of independence.

They appoint the Governor and Deputy Governors (after consultation) and are directly responsible for appointing the four external members of the nine-person MPC. These appointments allow the government to shape the general expertise and perspectives of the decision-makers.

Fiscal Policy: The government's fiscal policy (taxation and public spending decisions announced in the Budget and Autumn Statement) influences the wider economy and inflation. The MPC must take these fiscal measures into account when making its interest rate decisions. For example, government spending decisions can add to inflationary pressure, potentially influencing the Bank to raise interest rates.

Financial Crises: In extreme financial crises involving a material risk to public funds, the Chancellor has the power to approve "lender of last resort" operations and is ultimately accountable to Parliament for decisions involving public money.

Reserve Powers: Under the Bank of England Act 1998, the government retains a power to give temporary directions to the Bank on interest rates in extreme circumstances, but this power is considered a "nuclear option" and has never been officially used due to the potential for market instability and damage to the Bank's credibility.

As well as the above, the Government has a list of other items whereby it has influence..

‘concerned’ with motor finance impact on UK investability .

The boss of Lloyds Banking Group told has lawmakers there was a “deeply important” investability issue in the financial watchdog’s proposed motor finance redress scheme.

Charlie Nunn said, in a session with the House of Lords Financial Services Regulation Committee on Wednesday, he was “concerned” about investability and sentiment towards the UK following the regulator’s redress.

“Having a scheme like this, that can take away more than 20 years of profitability from the sector, is a really difficult issue for both global companies looking to invest in the UK – and for that matter my investors looking to invest in financial services,” Nunn said.

His remarks came just hours after the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) extended the deadline for its consultation on the redress programme following mounting backlash from lenders.

There were 800,000 more people out of work now than in 2019 due to health conditions, costing employers £85bn a year, according to the review by former John Lewis boss Sir Charlie Mayfield.

The problem could worsen without intervention, but Sir Charlie, who will lead a taskforce aimed at helping people return to work, said this was "not inevitable".

The move has been broadly welcomed, but some business groups said Labour's Employment Rights Bill included some disincentives to hiring people with existing illnesses.

One in five working age people were out of work, and not seeking work, according to the report, which was commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions but produced independently.

Without intervention, another 600,000 people could leave work due to health reasons by the end of the decade.
