RE: Trading Range13 Nov 2023 21:19
Just to give a different approach to the point that mcsquares is making, and with no agenda other than to share information. When they said "short trackers only report holdings over 0.5%" - that's 0.5% per entity that is short, not 0.5% in total. So there could be any number of shorters at just below 0.5% and none of them would be widely reported.
I've not looked at Ortex before so can't comment on what they are reporting, but if you go to any company page on shorttracker.co.uk near the top of the page in a green box it states - "Notice: We no longer track disclosures after they drop below 0.5%. It is possible that the manager still holds a short position even if we are showing it as zero." #
So for Ceres we have MW at 0.67% but you can also expect that Qube are likely still sitting at their 0.48% from 10 Oct, Canada Pension possibly even still on around 0.45% since April 2022 and any number of others that have never been above 0.5% in the first place.
It's not that it's just shorters maybe causing the recent SP slide, of course there are other factors in play as there always is. But these things are not mutually exclusive, they can both apply. If there is a risk over the JV, or the sector is out of favour, or a read across from other companies, etc. then that's exactly what might entice someone to a short position to begin with, even just as a hedge.
# I suspect that LSE get their data feed from shortracker.co.uk and it's disappointing that they don't include the same qualification in their Short Positions link at the top of these pages.
Posted with best intentions, and as always DYOR (and then correct me if I'm wrong).
