Cat You are 100 % correct. Everything is now being check and double checked then signed off by a senior person. Long gone are the mates rates and back handers. The wage bill in construction I would imagine will almost pay the 50m savings alone. And this is dead wood which has been hiding for years. Hard times ahead but it will bare fruit in 12 months time. Denby I presently work in an Interserve division and the Grim Reaper is hacking away but with a bit more finesse and chopping the deadwood of which there is a lot. Whoever wrote in their post that another layer of management needs culling hit the nail right on the head and this is starting to happen. The management team are going through everything with a fine tooth comb but it will take time. Oh and would i love to shake a few of those managers !!!!!

So what you are saying is that every cost is variable ? If I tendered to move a million m3 of soil @ £5 / m3 =£5 m that is a fixed cost in a tender. If the client wants to move more they pay more dimples. When tendering NO costs are variable because the bill of quantities tell you exactly what you have to do. They only variables are client changes or a provisional sum ( clients not sure how much soil he is moving). I would love to tender a job for whoever you work for !!!

These are not variable costs as they would have to be included within any tender. It only enables a little more profit if all goes well. BBY are refocusing and for them to have plant division probably makes sense. IRV are also refocusing and getting shut of a small plant division makes sense too.
