NOVACYT multiplies initiatives17 Apr 2020 15:40
aced with an influx of demand for its Covid-19 tests and a lack of raw materials to respond fully, Novacyt innovates. The French medtech is trying to remedy the shortage of extraction agents required for carrying out PCR tests by developing a new "direct-to-PCR" extraction method allowing the test to be carried out. This method does not require certain rare components and considerably reduces the number of extraction steps, which makes it possible to speed up cycle times, increase test rates and save money, she says.
Management believes that this innovation should facilitate the use of its test by removing one of the current obstacles to the processing of samples in laboratories. Novacyt anticipates that this new extraction technology will be available from May 2020.
The challenge is big. Following the announcement on March 30, 2020, Primerdesign, its subsidiary specializing in testing, has now reached the production target of its Covid-19 test of four million tests per month.
However, as this production is insufficient to meet demand, the company is striving to further increase this production capacity and has signed production partnership agreements with BioPharma Process Services Ltd and Biofortuna Limited, both based in the United Kingdom. , to support its existing partnership agreements.
In addition, Novacyt continues to increase its own production at its Primerdesign site in Southampton, UK.
With this additional capacity, the company plans to increase test production over the next three months to approximately eight million tests per month.
As part of the development of production capacities, Novacyt is also in talks with other potential production partners in the United Kingdom.
In order to manage and monitor the production, purchases and logistics of this capacity increase, Novacyt called on Chartwell Consulting, a specialist in rapid process improvement.
The latter has a team of senior consultants working within Novacyt to help manage scale-up plans to improve Primerdesign production and supply chain capacity.
Given the expected increase in production, the company has ordered additional raw materials to support this development. The company is also expanding its base of raw material suppliers for its test.
Currently, 76 components are required for the Covid-19 test, and Chartwell is helping the company identify other suppliers to develop a sustainable, long-term supply of its kits at this volume.
