RE: Fortunes2 Dec 2020 20:27
I first invested in August 2018 at 0.012 and added and added and added. I started with a broad diversified amount of stocks spread across 20k which was a mixture of very safe dividend stocks (infrastructure funds etc.) and much more risky plays of which GGP was one.
At that point, gold was a key strategic consideration; it looked undervalued and equities looked 'toppy'. I was right...but it took a while to come through. Which is a lesson for us all as far as GGP and the market is concerned; we're right, but it will take the rest of the herd longer than we think to catch on. But as part of the gold play, prospectors needed to be in there to turbo charge the whole investment (I also invested in Caledonian Mining which pays a dividend; nice business by the way; about to double production with commission of a new shaft and been given 'most favoured prospector' status by Zimbabwe's govt. Another Blackrock pick as well!)
But I selected GGP for the following reasons:
1. Safe jurisdiction which narrows the field considerably
2. Good prospects - Newmont had happened and there was the survey data
3. Looked out of favour and undervalued post-Newmont
4. Also, linked to (1) above, 6 prospects in one country. Sounds a bit leftfield, but it seemed to me that at least one of them must come up trumps as there must be some more gold in Australia. If it was 6 prospects in different geographies, the odds are much lower.
5. Linked to (4), management looked sensible, balanced and experienced. But I question over-valuing good management on a gold prospector. It matters now a lot, but it doesn't matter a jot if they don't discover anything!
Of course, I had no clue just how excellent Havieron was nor that there are multiple discoveries, as I anticipate. But as the story grew, I invested more and put money into the 'winner' and weighted the whole basket more towards GGP (average 0.04). I'm not very diversified anymore; 96% in GGP 4% in BMV, but I'm very comfortable with the risk. My aim was transformational from the start. My finances have been 'transformed' already but as I started out with nothing to lose that is still my attitude even though we're closing in on 200k (at 0.32!) in the ISA and well past that in the SIPP...and that includes 10k gone to charity.
However, I doubt many of us will achieve this sort of good fortune twice. GGP is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I intend to ride it hard the whole course!
